Racing Incident Report
HELENE SUPER STAR began awkwardly and lost ground.
When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he had been instructed to ride PHOTON WILLIE positively due to the lack of anticipated speed in the race. He said the horse had gone forward in its trial in the lead up to today’s race and it was felt that it would be able to obtain the lead without too much use having to be made of the horse. He said accordingly from his wide barrier, he allowed the horse to travel into a forward position in the early stages and after having to work to cross DUNDONNELL, PHOTON WILLIE was able to obtain a position on the rail. He said as he was instructed to have the horse travel comfortably, he allowed it to stride along in the lead. He added PHOTON WILLIE came under pressure passing the 600 Metres and then weakened out of the race from the Home Turn. M Chadwick was advised that it is incumbent upon jockeys to ensure that they ride their mounts in such a manner so that they are able to give off their best in the latter stages of the race wherever possible. He was told to ensure that he rides his mounts so that they do not have to do too much work in the early stages and consequently are then able to close off their race. Trainer A S Cruz stated that PHOTON WILLIE works keenly in the mornings and in its barrier trial in Hong Kong had also shown a propensity to prove difficult to settle. He said following today’s race he intends to discuss with the owner as to whether PHOTON WILLIE should be brought back in distance for its future races as the tempo of those events may provide the horse with the opportunity to settle off the speed and relax better in its races. The performance of PHOTON WILLIE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PHOTON WILLIE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, D Whyte stated that he was unable to offer any excuse for the disappointing performance of FLAGSHIP SHINE. He said he was able to obtain a forward position and then the horse travelled very well in the middle stages and he expected it to quicken nicely when asked. He said he remained racing on the rail behind DUNDONNELL for as long as possible before shifting FLAGSHIP SHINE out into clear running shortly after entering the Straight. He added he immediately became concerned when FLAGSHIP SHINE did not display the same turn of foot that it had previously shown in its races and despite being placed under pressure, the horse was very disappointing in the manner in which it weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of FLAGSHIP SHINE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
The Stewards interviewed G Mosse, the rider of HELENE SUPER STAR, Dr P Curl, Executive Manager, Veterinary Regulation and Dr P Robinson, Clinical Veterinary Surgeon, both of whom were positioned behind the barriers prior to this race. It was established that G Mosse had passed a comment to Dr Robinson advising that HELENE SUPER STAR had coughed on the way to the barriers. Both Dr Robinson and Dr Curl provided evidence that they had not fully heard what Jockey Mosse had said and that they were unaware that the comment was made in respect of any issue with HELENE SUPER STAR. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on HELENE SUPER STAR at the request of Trainer A S Cruz. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea.
Also after the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on GLORIOUS SUNDAY at the request of Trainer J Size. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, GLORIOUS SUNDAY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
ABLE FRIEND and DESIGNS ON ROME were sent for sampling.
