As the start was effected, FUNNY FORTUNE lifted its front feet off the ground and then shifted in, resulting in FANTASY JEWELLERY being hampered and losing ground.
SPEEDY SANDY and PERFECT CHARMING began only fairly.
Approaching the 1000 Metres, PERFECT CHARMING and SPEEDY SANDY were crowded for room inside FANTASY JEWELLERY which got its head on the side and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. In this incident, PERFECT CHARMING made heavy contact with the hindquarters of FANTASY JEWELLERY, resulting in that horse shifting in further and causing PERFECT CHARMING to be steadied when further crowded for room. After this, FANTASY JEWELLERY continued to get its head on the side and hang in.
After the 800 Metres, LUCKY BONUS commenced to over-race when the tempo of the race steadied and as a result was checked away from the heels of YOU READ MY MIND for some distance. In this incident, LUCKY BONUS shifted out and bumped TEOFILO CALVA which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of KYNAM.
Passing the 350 Metres, FUNNY FORTUNE was shifted out away from the heels of LUCKY BONUS into clear running.
YOU READ MY MIND had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 300 Metres.
Over the final 200 Metres, PERFECT CHARMING lay in under pressure.
Near the 150 Metres, TEOFILO CALVA got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in its rider, B Prebble, changing his whip into his left hand.
Throughout the race, ONE MORE KNIGHT travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, Z Purton stated that, from the outside barrier, he had to make use of BECAUSE OF YOU to cross runners to his inside and obtain a forward position. He said after crossing to the rail near the 800 Metres, BECAUSE OF YOU then wanted to lay out away from the rail. He said during the race BECAUSE OF YOU made an abnormal breathing noise, however, this is usual for the horse when he has ridden it in both its track work and races. He added in the Straight BECAUSE OF YOU gave ground despite being ridden along and he attributed this to the fact that use had to be made of the horse in the early stages together with its breathing difficulties. A veterinary inspection of BECAUSE OF YOU immediately following the race revealed that horse to be a “roarer”.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that LUCKY BONUS had lost its right front plate.
A veterinary inspection of ONE MORE KNIGHT immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea.
BECAUSE OF YOU, YOU READ MY MIND and TEOFILO CALVA were sent for sampling.
