Racing Incident Report

WISKY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MAGNETISM.
From wide barriers, AGREE, LITTERATEUR and VARA PEARL were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1200 Metres, SUNNY WIN commenced to race ungenerously and shifted out, resulting in BEAUTY LOVE being inconvenienced. SUNNY WIN then had to be ridden along to re-establish its position outside the lead.
Also passing the 1200 Metres, AGREE got its head up when travelling keenly.
After the 1200 Metres, MY GIFT was left racing wide and without cover.
For some distance after the 900 Metres, AGREE proved very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of MAGNETISM.
Passing the 200 Metres, AGREE raced in restricted room between STARSHIP and VARA PEARL.
Over the concluding stages, SPICY SURE raced tight inside BEAUTY LOVE which raced with its head on the side and lay in under pressure.
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident occurred between the 250 Metres and the 200 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether SUPER SPRINTER should be declared the 4th placegetter of the race. Subsequently N Callan, the rider of SPICY SURE, 5th placegetter, lodged a protest/objection against SUPER SPRINTER alleging interference prior to the 200 Metres. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the videos, the Stewards found that shortly after entering the Straight SPICY SURE was shifted in away from the heels of SUPER SPRINTER after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse. SPICY SURE then improved quickly to establish running to the inside of SUPER SPRINTER shortly after the 300 Metres. SUPER SPRINTER then commenced to shift in, resulting in SPICY SURE being crowded for room passing the 250 Metres and then being checked passing the 200 Metres. Having regard to the short head margin between the horses at the end of the race and the manner in which they were finishing off the race, the Stewards were satisfied that had the interference not occurred SPICY SURE would have beaten SUPER SPRINTER. Accordingly, the protest/objection was sustained and the placings amended to read No. 4, LITTERATEUR, 1st; No. 8, BEAUTY LOVE, 2nd; No. 6, WISKY, 3rd; No. 1, SPICY SURE, placed 4th and No. 5, SUPER SPRINTER, 5th. Subsequently Apprentice Mo pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that for some distance approaching the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of SPICY SURE, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. Apprentice Mo was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 24 May 2017 and to expire on Monday, 29 May 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Apprentice Mo was fined $15,000.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of VARA PEARL, J Moreira stated that although LITTERATEUR was able to win this race from back in the field, he felt that the majority of races tonight appeared to favour horses that were ridden in a prominent position. He said nonetheless VARA PEARL was very disappointing in that the horse did not close off the race as anticipated. A veterinary inspection of VARA PEARL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
VARA PEARL, LITTERATEUR and BEAUTY LOVE were sent for sampling.
