Alex Lai Hoi-wing
Age: 40
Background:
Alex Lai rode his first Hong Kong winner in 2004 when indentured to Peter Ho's stable. He was twice champion apprentice and rode his 70th winner in December 2007 to complete his apprenticeship. His first big win came on Mr Medici, for his old boss, in the 2009 Queen Mother Memorial Cup. Lai's supreme moment to date came when he and Ricky Yiu joined forces with Ultra Fantasy to win the G1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama, Japan, in October of 2010, thereby becoming the first all-Chinese trainer-jockey partnership to triumph in a Group 1 overseas. Lai was sidelined for all bar the first three meetings of the 2017/18 season and the whole of the 2018/19 season due to a badly fractured wrist suffered in a race fall. He returned at the start of the 2019/20 season and since then has added a further ten wins to his Hong Kong total.
