Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, ALAKAZAM became fractious, then began awkwardly and lost ground. Before being allowed to race again, ALAKAZAM will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. QUICK NEWS was slow to begin and lost a significant amount of ground at the start. Near the 1000 Metres, X-SPEED, which was being eased in an attempt to find cover, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of CHINA WORLD which was carried out by GREAT STAR which when proving difficult to settle got its head up and shifted out away from HORACE'S HORSE. Some inconvenience was caused to STAR OF SHANTOU which was racing outside X-SPEED. Near the 600 Metres, GLORIOUS RHYTHM was bumped by X-SPEED which got its head on the side and shifted in. In the middle stages, ALAKAZAM hung out. Near the 400 Metres, FAST TRACK was steadied and shifted to the outside of STAR OF SHANTOU to obtain clear running. Approaching the 200 Metres, DESERT STORM was hampered and carried wider by HORACE'S HORSE which shifted out. D Whyte (STAR OF SHANTOU) explained on the track the horse had shown a tendency to hang out on the turns. He said because of this he was instructed if possible to race in a forward position but with cover. He said in the early stages X-SPEED crossed him, however, after doing so that horse steadied and came back in an attempt to find cover which caused STAR OF SHANTOU to be carried further back than was intended. He said at the 1000 Metres he shifted to the outside of X-SPEED and went forward of that horse, however, when he did this, X-SPEED was inconvenienced which in turn caused inconvenience to his mount. D Whyte went on to say in the middle stages STAR OF SHANTOU did hang out, however, raced with cover. The explanation of D Whyte was accepted. Apprentice K T Yeung (CHINA WORLD) said he was instructed to lead if able to do so without having to make too much use of the horse. He said otherwise he was to ride in 2nd or 3rd position. He said CHINA WORLD dipped when the gates opened, he then rode along for a short distance, however, CHINA WORLD did not muster pace quickly and when ZERO IN continued forward on his inside, he elected to sit outside that horse in accordance with his instructions. The explanation of Apprentice Yeung was accepted. S Dye (BOUNTIFUL) said rounding the Home Turn he commenced to ride the horse along hands and heels, it immediately got its head up and was not "hitting out" in its action. He therefore continued to ride along vigorously hands and heels until after the 200 Metres when he then commenced to ride it out with the whip. He said whilst making ground in the Straight, BOUNTIFUL did not appreciate today's firm track surface. F Coetzee (ZERO IN) said whenever he had ridden the horse, it had been the intention to ride it forward and possibly lead. He said however the horse had shown itself previously to be a tardy beginner, it then mustered speed and could prove difficult to settle. He said today before the race ZERO IN appeared much calmer, it began cleanly, he therefore allowed it to go forward and when CHINA WORLD, the horse he expected to lead, did not press on forward of him, he allowed ZERO IN to stride along in the lead. LUCKY CHAMPION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, LUCKY CHAMPION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, LUCKY CHAMPION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ZERO IN and DESERT STORM were sent for sampling.
