Racing Incident Report

TURBOJET was withdrawn on 16.11.04 on veterinary grounds (inappetance) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHAMPION BOY (G Mossé). Before being allowed to race again, TURBOJET will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GREAT STAR and KING OF TURBOT were slow to begin. MYTHIC STEED began awkwardly. Near the 1300 Metres, JADE RUYI was checked severely when crowded for room inside GREAT STAR which when proving difficult to settle got its head on the side and shifted in away from WATCHMAN which itself shifted in slightly. KING OF TURBOT and SUPRA SMART KID which were following were checked severely and WINNING WAYS and CHAMPION BOY hampered. Although the incident was one of some significance, the Stewards were satisfied the manner in which GREAT STAR was racing had contributed to the incident and that F Coetzee had endeavoured to prevent his mount from shifting in, therefore no action was taken. For a considerable distance after this, GREAT STAR continued to prove difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions when being steadied away from the heels of UNIVERSAL GLORY. Near the 1000 Metres, KING OF TURBOT got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of WINNING WAYS. In the middle stages, SUPRA SMART KID proved difficult to settle. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, UNIVERSAL GLORY and GREAT STAR raced tight. Over about the final 50 Metres, MYTHIC STEED was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind BAYVIEW LAD. Because of this, MYTHIC STEED was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Just prior to the winning post, HAPPY FORTUNE, which was closing the race off strongly, was checked when disappointed for running inside UNIVERSAL GLORY which shifted in slightly away from GREAT STAR which itself shifted in. No action was taken. For the major part of the race, CHAMPION BOY raced wide and without cover and in the middle stages was allowed to stride forward. WINNING WAYS and WATCHMAN were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported CHAMPION BOY was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, CHAMPION BOY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
