Racing Incident Report
From the outside gate, throughout the race, BE MY BRIDE raced wide and without cover. Near the 1200 Metres, SURE FORTUNE was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SILLY BOY. After the 1200 Metres, KINGSTON GLORY got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SURE FORTUNE. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, JUST IN TIME was steadied when crowded for room inside THE FACULTY which got its head on the side and shifted in slightly away from SMART CHIEF (C Soumillon) which itself shifted in. For a considerable distance after this, JUST IN TIME continued to race tight inside THE FACULTY which itself raced tight inside SMART CHIEF which improved to the inside of BE MY BRIDE as that horse was giving ground. C Soumillon was reprimanded for having runners to his inside unnecessarily tight and was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to provide them with comfortable racing room. Making the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, SMART CHIEF got its head on the side and hung out. Near the 100 Metres, SPARKLE became unbalanced when improving between SURE FORTUNE and MODERN PROSPECT. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of X-SPEED, W M Lai said he had intended to ride his mount behind the lead, accordingly he rode to go forward in the early stages, after passing the winning post the first time looked to his inside to see if he was able to shift in and obtain a position behind the lead, however, there was not an opportunity to do so, he therefore elected to press on, cleared runners to his inside and crossed to the fence. He said after obtaining this position he steadied X-SPEED, however, when SOUND OF SILENCE and BE ME BRIDE raced to his outside, X-SPEED did not appreciate this. He said after the 500 Metres he commenced to ride X-SPEED along, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and in the Straight gave ground. X-SPEED was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of X-SPEED after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of X-SPEED was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, X-SPEED will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MODERN PROSPECT, SHINING GEM and SMART CHIEF were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported SURE FORTUNE was scoped at the request of Trainer A T Millard. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SURE FORTUNE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
