Racing Incident Report

SMART CHIEF was withdrawn on 31.5.05 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter JUSTINIAN (G Schofield). Before being allowed to race again, SMART CHIEF will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Following being weighed prior to the race, X-SPEED became fractious, momentarily broke away from its stables assistant and shifted its left hind plate. This plate was reset. X-SPEED was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. WINNING SMILE was a little slow to begin and then was bumped by EL PRADO STAR. Shortly after the start, TEMMOKU and STAR PRODIGY were steadied when crowded for room between BAUHINIA which shifted out and SHINING DAY which shifted in when being ridden along to maintain its position inside MAXIMUM JOY. Making the first turn, WINING SMILE hung out and near the 1300 Metres shifted ground and was checked away from the heels of EL PRADO STAR which at this time shifted in slightly when racing tight inside CHARIOT OF WEI HAI which in turn was racing tight inside PRO JOY. STAR PRODIGY, which was following WINNING SMILE, was checked in consequence. As the Stewards believed WINNING SMILE had contributed to this incident, no action was taken. Near the 1400 Metres, BAUHINIA was steadied when crowded for room between ARROGANCE and MAXIMUM JOY which got its head on the side and shifted in. Near the 1200 Metres, WINNING SMILE, which was hanging out, was checked away from the heels of ONE SHOT. After this, WINNING SMILE continued to hang out. At the 500 Metres, TEMMOKU was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running inside ONE SHOT. Making the Home Turn and in the Straight, STAR PRODIGY hung out and proved difficult to ride. A Delpech (FORTUNE GOLD) reported his saddle slipped back shortly after the start which placed him at a disadvantage. When questioned, F Coetzee, the rider of SHINING DAY, was unable to offer an explanation for the horse's poor performance. He said the intention had been to lead if possible with SHINING DAY, however, after the horse began satisfactorily from a wide barrier it failed to show the necessary speed to obtain a forward position and as a consequence got well back. He said he continued to ride SHINING DAY along and in the Back Straight shifted towards the outside of the field in the hope the horse might pick up and improve its position, however, it failed to do so. He did point out the only race in which SHINING DAY had been successful it was able to obtain the lead from the inside barrier. He added the work of SHINING DAY leading into tonight's race in his opinion had been good. SHINING DAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of SHINING DAY after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SHINING DAY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHINING DAY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. X-SPEED was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. Following the race, X-SPEED was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise, however, an endoscopic examination did not show any abnormality. JUSTINIAN and ARROGANCE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted WINNING SMILE had lost its left hind plate.
