Racing Incident Report

On jumping, MIRACLE DRAGON and DANRIVA were crowded for room inside FAIRPLAY. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, FAIRPLAY got its head on the side and shifted out from behind SUNRISE LINING. After entering the Back Straight, BALL OF FIRE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up on a number of occasions. At the 500 Metres, CHINA SPORTFIELD was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SUNRISE LINING which at this time hung in. After the 500 Metres, BALL OF FIRE was checked when disappointed for running between SPARKLE and MIRACLE DRAGON. At the 250 Metres, FAIRPLAY was carried wider by TOUCH DOWN which shifted to the outside of SUNRISE LINING to obtain clear running. At the 100 Metres, BALL OF FIRE, which was closing the race off strongly, got its head on the side and shifted in. Because of this, H K Yim, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the opinion an incident had occurred over the concluding stages which cast doubt on whether CHINA SPORTFIELD should be declared the winner of the race. Y T Cheng, the rider of TOUCH DOWN, 2nd placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against CHINA SPORTFIELD (D Nikolic) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the concluding stages. The evidence disclosed that over the concluding stages CHINA SPORTFIELD shifted out and over about the last 50 Metres made contact with TOUCH DOWN and carried that horse wider on the track. The Stewards were of the opinion that had the interference which did occur not taken place, bearing in mind the nose margin between the horses at the end of the race, TOUCH DOWN would have finished in front of CHINA SPORTFIELD, therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly the amended placings became No. 6, TOUCH DOWN, 1st; No. 7, CHINA SPORTFIELD, 2nd; No. 12 DENDRANTHEMA LOVE, 3rd; and No. 9, MIRACLE DRAGON, 4th. Subsequently D Nikolic was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. For the major part of the race, DANRIVA travelled wide and without cover. The performance of PLENTY OF TALENT, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, PLENTY OF TALENT will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. DANRIVA was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DANRIVA after the race did not show any significant findings. TOUCH DOWN and CHINA SPORTFIELD were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported TOUCH DOWN was distressed. Before being allowed to race again, TOUCH DOWN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
