Racing Incident Report

Just prior to the start being effected, BEST TANGO became fractious. GRAND HARBOUR, which was in the stall immediately adjacent to BEST TANGO, also became fractious and lunged at the front gate, resulting in the gates opening. After travelling a short distance, GRAND HARBOUR was restrained by its rider and returned to the Start where it was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said, in his opinion, it was suitable to race.
NEWSWIRE FREE began awkwardly, resulting in its rider, N Callan, becoming unbalanced. A short distance later, NEWSWIRE FREE was steadied when bumped by SUPER SPRINTER which was taken out by MAC ROW.
GLORY STAR and LIGHTNING AND GOLD bumped at the start.
RAPID TRIUMPH was slow to begin.
From the outside barrier, BEST TANGO was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, SUPER SPRINTER momentarily raced in restricted room inside LIGHTNING AND GOLD which was taken in by NOBLE DE MAN which, when being steadied to allow SPARKLING SWORD to cross, got its head on the side and lay in.
After the 450 Metres, SUPER SPRINTER raced tight between NOBLE DE MAN and LIGHTNING AND GOLD which shifted out.
LIGHTNING AND GOLD lost its right front plate near the 400 Metres.
In the early part of the Straight, NOBLE DE MAN lay in under pressure.
Approaching the 300 Metres, RAPID TRIUMPH shifted in away from the heels of FAITHFUL BOY and then raced tight inside that horse approaching the 250 Metres. FAITHFUL BOY was then steadied away from the heels of NEWSWIRE FREE when bumped by RAPID TRIUMPH passing the 250 Metres when that horse shifted out to obtain clear running.
Passing the 300 Metres, LIGHTNING AND GOLD and SUPER SPRINTER bumped due to SUPER SPRINTER shifting in and LIGHTNING AND GOLD attempting to shift out from behind GLORY STAR.
Near the 50 Metres, RAPID TRIUMPH raced in restricted room inside NEWSWIRE FREE.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of SUPER FORM, Trainer A T Millard stated that prior to its racing career commencing in Hong Kong, the horse had experienced considerable front tendon issues which resulted in him not being able to have the horse as fit as he would have liked. He said following the off season, he had been able to give SUPER FORM a better preparation which included two barrier trials. He added whilst SUPER FORM did fail on one occasion last season on a "Good to Yielding" track, he believed the rain affected track tonight had suited SUPER FORM given that the horse was much fitter than it was when racing on a similar surface last season.
When questioned, Apprentice K K Chiong (NOBLE DE MAN) stated that after the 1000 Metres she was following GLORY STAR and had SUPER SPRINTER positioned to her inside. She said although there was a gap ahead of NOBLE DE MAN to improve its position to be racing closer to GLORY STAR, she felt that she would have had to ride NOBLE DE MAN along at that time to make up this ground. She said as she was reluctant to ride her mount aggressively at this time, SUPER SPRINTER was then able to improve its position slightly and then shift NOBLE DE MAN out approaching the 800 Metres. She said as SUPER SPRINTER was shifting out, she attempted to ride NOBLE DE MAN forward to prevent that horse from being able to shift away from the rail, however, she was unable to do so and this resulted in NOBLE DE MAN being forced into a three wide position without cover for the remainder of the race. Apprentice Chiong conceded that, in retrospect, she should have ridden NOBLE DE MAN along prior to the 900 Metres so as to maintain a margin over SUPER SPRINTER and prevent that horse from shifting out. She was advised that in future she should ride her mounts with more judgement that she did on this occasion so that she is able to maintain advantageous positions.
A veterinary inspection of GRAND HARBOUR, SUPER SPRINTER and FAITHFUL BOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SUPER SPRINTER, SUPER FORM and GLORY STAR were sent for sampling.
