S1-1 Kewney Stakes

SOFT SAND has enormous potential and can atone for her defeat at the hands of Shopaholic last time out at Caulfield. The selection was forced to work hard from her wide draw and proved vulnerable to something with an easier trial over the concluding stages and that’s how it turned out.  Damien Oliver should be able to get a softer run from his middle gate and given a good draw and nice run in the race, SOFT SAND looks the one to beat.

Shopaholic continues to race in excellent form, although she has had all the favours in her past couple of runs.

Sydney filly Angel Of Mercy ran a great race at this course & distance in her last start when jockey Craig Williams said her inexperience racing left-handed cost her victory. Hopefully she is now better accustomed to the Melbourne way of racing and she looks a major player.

Total Attraction is unbeaten from three starts and must also be considered from the leading Peter Moody stable.

S1-2 Lexus Newmarket Handicap

HAY LIST has to concede weights all-round but he is of the highest quality and he looked in superb condition when first-up last time out after a long spell. He has a superb straight-track record and it must be remembered that he remains the only horse to seriously examine Black Caviar and on that alone he appears the one to beat.

There was huge money for Bel Sprinter in the Oakleigh Plate a fortnight ago but the horse never got a clear run and should have finished much closer than sixth. There is no doubt that he is up to winning a race of this nature with a little more luck.

Rain Affair has been almost untouchable in Sydney, building an imposing record of 10 wins in 11 starts. He has been winning with ridiculous ease regularly and has to be treated with the utmost respect.

The consistent Foxwedge ran fourth behind Black Caviar and Hay List in the Lightning Stakes last time out so he should be fitter for that run and drops significantly down the handicap to a very competitive weight.

The other one to mull over could be the underrated mare Lone Rock who ran fifth in the Lightning Stakes and looks suited to the extra furlong having won a Group 1 over this distance in Adelaide.

SELECTIONS:

1. HAY LIST

14. BEL SPRINTER

6. RAIN AFFAIR

22. FOXWEDGE

13. LONE ROCK
