S1-1 Queen Anne Stakes
The highest-rated racehorse on the planet FRANKEL seeks to extend his winning sequence to 11 in the opening event of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting. Sir Henry Cecil’s four-year-old will start as one of the shortest priced favorites of modern times, and cannot be opposed.
He will be joined by his stable and work companion BULLET TRAIN, who will ensure a strong and even gallop for his more illustrious stablemate, and guarantee a truly run race.
Opposition includes Aidan O’Brien’s EXCELEBRATION who has already seen the rear view of FRANKEL four times, thrice as runner-up in last season QEII Stakes at Ascot, in the Greenham Stakes and the Lockinge Stakes both at Newbury last month.
STRONG SUIT, who was a late withdrawal from the Lockinge Stakes because of the soft ground, could make his seasonal reappearance. This winner of 5 of ten races, was a winner of the Group 2 Jersey Stakes at the Royal meeting last year and subsequently won the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket. It has been well documented however, he doesn’t like soft ground – something he could well encounter at Ascot.
SIDE GLANCE was beaten over 9 lengths by Frankel in last season’s QEII Stakes at Ascot but showed his well being when comfortably winning the Diomed Stakes at the recent Epsom meeting – odds-on favorite WORTHADD fourth beaten 2 lengths. He does however face a monumental task against FRANKEL.
Ex-Italian challenger WORTHADD – now with Sir Mark Prescott’s yard in Newmarket, ran well when runner-up to CANFORD CLIFFS in last season’s Lockinge Stakes. He completely failed to act on the undulating course at Epsom, and can be forgiven that performance. He looks at long-shot for exotic bets.
Three-time Group 1 winner HELMET could make a surprise appearance after joining Mahmoud Al Zarooni’s Godolphin team. This former Australian star – a winner of 6 of his thirteen races – was last seen when disappointing in the UAE Derby at Meydan, but has been working exceptionally well on the Newmarket gallops. German challenger INDOMITO adds some more international flavor to the race after pleasing his trainer Andreas Wohler in his warm-up race when runner-up in a Group 3 at Dusseldorf in April. He does however face a near impossible task at the weights.

INTERESTING FACTS
1) 80% of winners were either first or second last time out
2) Australian-bred runners have won 4 time with 2 seconds and 2 thirds in the last 10 years
3) The draw could be important – you will need to be drawn on the same side where the pace runners will be
BATED BREATH and SOLE POWER finished 1st and 2nd in the Temple Stakes at Haydock recently (best Sprint form so far in UK this season) but that was run in the only week of the year so far in the UK where the sun has been out, and the ground was officially firm – completely different to what they will encounter on Tuesday.
Both these horses are confirmed fast-ground specialists - BATED BREATH finished fifth in last season’s Golden Jubilee Stakes on soft ground – which is 10lbs below his best mark. SOLE POWER was taken out of last season’s Nunthorpe Stakes due to good to soft ground conditions and is at least 14lbs worse on soft. He is a reliable top-class sprinter on decent ground (2nd in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan) but ran moderately on softish ground at Royal Ascot last year.
ORTENSIA has winning soft ground form but not at Group 1 level. She is unbeaten since joining Paul Messara’s stable (3 from 3) and held off SOLE POWER when winning the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meyden in March. Her hold-up style of racing should suit with a frenetic pace that is always generated in this sprint.
WIZZ KID is a progressive French 4-Y-O who will be an emerging force in European sprinting this season. Her style of racing suggests she is tailor made for a fast-run 1000 meters at Ascot. Always best on soft ground, she beat the eventual King’s Stand Stakes winner PROHIBIT in a Chantilly warm-up race last year, missed Royal Ascot, and then her autumn campaign included a fast-finishing fifth to MARGOT DID after an interrupted passage in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, a similar position in the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (1000 meters) on quick ground, and then finally runner-up to Deacon Blues in a Group 2 on Champions Day at Ascot. She recently outclassed her rivals when running away from opposition in her seasonal pipe-opener at Chantilly (PROHIBIT was 7th), and will be primed for this race. She will be very strongly supported on the day.
MARGOT DID – winner of the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes last season, has good form at Ascot, is possible for the exotic bets.
LITTLE BRIDGE had both BATED BREATH and SOLE POWER behind in eighth and ninth, when only fourth to Lucky Nine in the CX HK Sprint in December (JOY AND FUN dead-heat 2nd). His form this season has been reasonably consistent – winning the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (1000 meters) and the CX Jockey Club Sprint (1200 meters). LITTLE BRIDGE has won four times in HK on either yielding or good to yielding ground. JOY AND FUN suffered an injury when running and finishing 13th in the King’s Stand Stakes a couple of seasons back. He finished third to ORTENSIA in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai in March, and does have experience at Ascot.
STONE OF FOLCA caused an upset when the 50-1 outsider of twenty runners, comprehensively won the ‘Dash’ (Handicap) (1000 meters) at Epsom on Derby Day in an unbelievably fast time having been drawn with a negative barrier. Unfortunately he has a suspect temperament, but if in the right frame of mind, could run well at big odds.
For anyone looking for a long-shot NIGHT CARNATION is worth a second look. The 4-Y-0 was very unlucky at Newmarket in April and has subsequently been showing encouraging signs on the Kingsclere gallops.

INTERESTING FACTS 1) There have been 7 winning favorites in the last 11 runnings.
2) 7 out of the last 10 winners won last time out
3) 7 of the last 10 winners raced in the Irish 2000 Guineas
4) Trainer Aidan O’Brien has saddled 4 winners and 8 placed horses from 25 runners in the last 10 years.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien appears to have a stranglehold on championship 1600 meters races in the UK and Ireland this season, and will be multi-handed again in this race. POWER appears his strongest option after beating several of his potential rivals in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. This was a couple of weeks after flopping in the English 2000 Guineas on good to soft ground at Newmarket. His juvenile campaign included winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating DRAGON PULSE in the National Stakes, and having MOST IMPROVED behind when a strong-finishing second in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Although POWER is a thoroughly professional performer, a winning margin of one length is the longest he has achieved in four victories since his winning debut last season. Form students could point out Irish 2000 Guineas victory is questionable, with runner-up FOXTROT ROMEO having been beaten in his two previous races, and third placed REPLY producing his best run in four pattern races. English 2000 Guineas third HERMIVAL failed to enhance that form but is better suited by a soft surface, while fifth placed in the Irish 2000 Guineas BORN TO SEA – half-brother to the legendary Sea the Stars – improved dramatically on previous form after being fitted with a hood. In fact the John Oxx-trained BORN TO SEA can be fancied to make the frame now after showing he stays 1600 meters, and with the hood helping him to focus on the job
French 2000 Guineas winner LUCAYAN has been supplemented for the race (cost HK$300,000) after pleasing his trainer Franois Rohaut in his final work-out. The French trainer is confident his challenger is improving week by week and feels sure he will make the frame, although the French milers don’t appear as strong as their rivals on paper from across the water. Rival DRAGON PULSE produced a disappointing performance in the French 2000 Guineas finishing 9th, although it later transpired the colt had an internal problem during the race which has now been rectified. Trainer Mikel Delzangles is confident he will step up on that form and should run well.
Another horse to be supplemented is English northern raider GABRIAL who according to his owner is still a big baby, but nevertheless produced an impressive performance when winning in the handicap company at Haydock last time. This colt could have gone for the Britannia Handicap later in the week, but connections feel sure this horse is a Group 1 performer.
Frankie Dettori will be aboard Brian Meehan’s improving COGITO who impressed race-watchers when coming from some way back to get up close home and win the Listed Heron Stakes over 1600 meters at Sandown recently. The colt will have to improve a lot more to be concerned in the finish, but looks a potential Group performer.

INTERESTING FACTS
1) There have been 7 winning favorites from the last 12 runnings
2) 21 out of the last 22 winners won their last race.
3) Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the race 6 times and Richard Hannon 3 times
4) US-bred horses have won the race 4 times in the last 10 races
There has been a substantial gamble last week in the UK on the Aidan O’Brien-trained CRISTOFORO COLOMBO which would suggest he is the flagship challenger from the Irish trainers attempt to win the race for the second year running. This beautifully bred colt whose father Henrythenavigator won the Coventry back in 2007, won a maiden event easily at Navan last month and is rumored to have been ‘flying at home’ on the Ballydoyle gallops.
CRISTOFORO COLOMBO will need to step up markedly on his racecourse form if he is to withstand the likes of another Irish challenger DAWN APPROACH – by English Derby winner New Approach – who has won all his three races to date, including the Alfred Nobel Rochestown Listed Stakes over 1200 meters on good to yielding ground. Jim Bolger’s colt is the top-rated Irish challenger on form and will take plenty of beating.
The English challenge will be spearheaded by Richard Hannon’s SIR PRANCEALOT who produced a stunning performance after being stopped twice during the race, but then sprouting wings and putting four-and-a-half lengths of daylight between himself and his rivals in the National Stakes over 1000 meters at Sandown recently. That is the best juvenile form seen so far this season.
Another colt to create a good impression was the Charlie Hills-trained ENGLISHMAN who won what initially looked a run-of the-mill event over 1000 meters at Newbury last month. That was until at five of his beaten rivals came out and subsequently won next time out.
Trainer Charlie Hills could have saddled the highly-rated ENGLISHMAN but is relying on the once raced and successful FUNK SOUL BROTHER who has been getting on good reports from work-watchers at Lambourn.
THE TAJ from Richard Hannon’s yard worked exceptionally well on the home gallops on Sunday morning and has been pencilled in for this race. He is worth keeping an eye on.
O’Brien will be represented by another American bred colt in LINES OF BATTLE who may have only won by a head on his first appearance in the Big Bad Bob European Breeders Fun Maiden over 1200 meters, but won far more easily than the narrow margin would suggest. The positive vibes coming out of the O’Brien stable suggest he is a Group horse in the making.

S1-5 Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
This 4000-meter marathon is one of the most difficult handicaps to solve over the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting.
It's usually won by National Hunt (NH) trained horses (jumping stables) Nicky Henderson always does well in this race and has entered SENTRY DUTY and last year’s winner VEILED. Preference is for the 10-year-old SENTRY DUTY who is in his element over this distance and is bound to be concerned at the finish.
Trainer David Pipe is another who pinpoints his horses for this race. FIULIN may have not run on the flat for a couple of seasons but has had a successful NH campaign and is strongly fancied. The trainer also saddles ASHBRITTLE who ran well in some of the big staying handicaps last season and looks well handicapped.
Champion Irish NH trainer Willie Mullins is always to be feared when he sends a horse over to England and it is a significant pointer that he has booked Ryan Moore for SIMENON.
AL KHAWANEEJ is a progressive 4-Y-0 who has improved dramatically on his last two starts for a step-up to 2800 meters and 3200 meters. Hugely impressive at Goodwood on his latest occasion when staying on strongly - he will be in his element over this marathon trip and has an ideal handicap mark of 90.

S1-6 Windsor Castle Stakes
The Windsor Castle Stakes is probably the weakest juvenile (2-Y-0) event of the week and often throws up surprising winners such as Flashman Papers at 100-1 in 2008 and Strike the Tiger at 33-1 in 2009.
Trainer Richard Hannon has a couple of interesting contenders in LYRIC ACE who won on the all-weather track at Kempton recently and is very highly-rated in the yard.
There were lots to like about COSMIC CHATTER when he won on his debut last month. The Highclere Syndicate-owned horse has indicated he could be a horse to follow this season and has good Win and Place prospects.
Aidan O'Brien is likely to be represented by the improving PARLIAMENT SQUARE, who despite having plenty to do on form, has been working with plenty of zest at Ballydoyle.
Another Irish challenger is Tommy Stack’s DYLANBARU who has had plenty of experience already this season and could be a likely long-shot for the frame.
PIXILATED won a maiden race last week and has been earmarked for this contest. His trainer Gay Kelleway was the first female jockey to ride a winner - Sprowston Boy - at Royal Ascot.
Trainer Mick Channon always does well with juveniles at Royal Ascot so it could pay to keep an eye on PAY FREEZE who was an easy winner last time and is bound to improve.

| Wendyll Woods began his riding career in Hong Kong as an apprentice jockey to trainer Lawrence Fownes in 1983. He became Fownes' retained jockey from 1987/88 to end of 2001/02 when he was retained by his younger brother Sean Woods. During his Hong Kong racing career, he rode an impressive 3,897 Hong Kong races, riding 321 winners with a winning percentage of 8.2%, including the Queen Mother Memorial Cup with CARACOLER in 2002. Woods also spent five years racing in England where he won several key races including Heron Stakes and Princess Elizabeth Stakes. He currently runs a stud farm with his older brother in England. | |
Royal Ascot is the highlights of the racing calendar, where outstanding racing, fashion and style combine at one of the most beautiful settings in the country.
With no fewer than three Group 1 contests taking place, there is hardly a classier card in the racing calendar, than the first day of Royal Ascot.
S1-1 Queen Anne Stakes
The week kicks off with what is arguably the classiest contest of all, the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile. After routing familiar opposition in last month’s Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, FRANKEL is impossible to oppose from a win perspective. He seemed better than ever and with no fresh challenges being brought to the table at Royal Ascot, he can maintain his unbeaten run.
EXCELEBRATIONis a very classy horse in his own right, but he continues to run into FRANKEL in these top races. It would be interesting if they adopted some different tactics in order to bring about a victory, but in reality, he’s likely to fill second spot once again behind the world’s best racehorse.
Richard Hannon trained the winner of the race in 2009 and 2011 and while he is very unlikely to add a third in this year’s renewal, his STRONG SUIT has place claims. He has only run into FRANKEL once, but was beaten 13 lengths on that occasion. He is a better horse since undergoing a breathing operation and won two Group 2 events as well as a Group 3, including the Jersey Stakes at the 2011 Royal meeting.
Although he won the Lingfield Derby Trial as a three year old, Bullet Train’s performance last time out behind FRANKEL could be seen as a career best. His duties these days are very much restricted to that of pacemaker to his three-parts brother, but he could well plug on once again.
Fourth best though could be Andrew Balding’s SIDE GLANCE. Fresh from a Group 3 victory in Epsom, he has won twice at Ascot and is a reliable enough performer, albeit slightly outclassed here.

S1-2 King’s Stand Stakes
The King’s Stand Stakes is one of the most pulsating races of the week and one in which international raiders have a strong record in. It is a shame that prevailing weather conditions could scupper the chances of Roger Charlton’s sprinter BATED BREATH. He broke the track record on very quick ground at Haydock in the Group 2 Temple Stakes recently and may not even take his chance in this if the going remains on the soft side.
SOLE POWER was second in the Temple Stakes, but this classy sprinter’s best form is also on quicker ground. That said, these two have plenty of class and are likely to play a part in the finish, despite the ground being not as they prefer.
Aussie raider ORTENSIA beat SOLE POWER in Dubai with a degree of comfort. Australia have claimed this race four times since the year 2000 and they have a live chance of adding to that tally here. This mare has been victories on her last three starts and also has winning form where ‘soft’ has been in the going description.
Little Bridge comes to the UK on the back of two impressive performances at Sha Tin, most recently winning the Group 2 Sprint Cup as a short priced favourite. There is a slight suspicion that the five years old is more suited to a slightly longer distance, but he, along with fellow Hong Kong raider JOY AND FUN , is a fascinating contender. It’s also worth noting that this will be Little Bridge’s first run away from his home track in Sha Tin.
JOY AND FUN defeated Little Bridge in 2011 when receiving weight, but could only manage fifth behind Danny Shum’s sprinter clashed in the Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint two months later. JOY AND FUN is now a nine years old, but put in a very pleasing run when a fast finishing third behind the re-opposing SOLE POWER and ORTENSIA at Meydan. He may struggle to reverse that form, and we must also take into account the strenuous campaign already taken in at home, by the two raiders from Hong Kong.
WIZZ KID ’s second to DEACON BLUES on British Champions Day looks excellent form in the context of this race. The four year old filly is arguably much better back at the minimum distance, having already won two Group 2 contests at the trip.

S1-3 St James’s Palace Stakes
This year’s renewal of the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes looks a tricky puzzle to solve. Much of the field have form in the 2000 Guineas as well as the French and Irish equivalents. It is interesting that owner Dr. Marwan Koukash has supplemented the progressive Gabrial to take his place in this one mile contest. He is very highly regarded by both his owner and trainer, and although he finished seventeen and a half lengths behind POWER in last year’s Coventry Stakes, he looks much better at three and this quirky individual could go well at a decent price.
LUCAYAN won the French 2000 Guineas at long odds, and it would be folly to dismiss him from calculations here. He could well improve on that performance here, but will need to, as it looks like a rather weak renewal of the French classic.
Aidan O’Brien has saddled six winners of this contest since 2000 and saddles the likely favourite POWER. He brings the best juvenile form to the table having won the National Stakes, and he bounced back from his 37 length defeat in the English 2000 Guineas by running on strongly to take the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. He looks versatile with regards to ground, and it must be noted that his trainer won the St James’s Palace Stakes and Irish 2000 Guineas double in 2009, 2008, 2002 and 2001.
Born To Sea has long been touted as an exciting horse, not just because of his close bloodlines with one of the greatest of all time, Sea The Stars. There is a strong argument that he still possesses plenty of untapped potential at a mile and if he settles better in this race, he could build on his promising fifth behind POWER in the Irish 2000 Guineas. He was also behind FOXTROT ROMEO, who was sent off a huge price for that race on his seasonal reappearance. The latter is a big strong horse, well-liked by connections, he will come on for the Curragh run and could take some beating here. Bryan Smart’s colt will have no issues with softer underfoot conditions.
Despite finishing well behind POWER in the same race, HERMIVAL, a French raider, is worth a strong mention. He can be given credit for his third placing in the Newmarket classic, as he had to take up the running far too early on what many perceive to be the unfavoured far rail. He was only beaten around two and a half lengths that day behind FRENCH FIFTEEN and Guineas and Derby hero Camelot. The son of DUBAWIonly has a maiden win to his name, but he still has scope to improve further at this trip, and could go well at relatively enticing odds.

S1-4 Coventry Stakes
Expect to see some of classic contenders of 2013 in this race, which has been won by the likes of CANFORD CLIFFS and ROYAL APPLAUSE. Aidan O’Brien-trained POWER won the last year’s renewal and saddles CRISTOFORO COLOMBO in this season’s heat, where he will be looking to saddles his seventh winner of the Coventry. He put in a very professional debut performance and looks to have strong credentials of replicating his sire HENRYTHENAVIGATOR who also won this race as a juvenile.
Richard Hannon has an excellent recent record in the contest, having trained the winner in 2009 and 2010. His leading contender is likely to be SIR PRANCEALOT who has looked an excellent colt with a real turn of foot when winning his first two starts, the latest a four and half length romp in a listed race. His debut run also came at Bath on good and softish ground, so he may well handle the likely testing condition.
The form of ENGLISHMAN’s debut win has been advertised in no uncertain times in recent weeks. Five horses in behind that day have since won at least one start since, including CAY VERDE who won a listed contest in Ireland. Many of the others also ran well next time out. He looks a very likely winner for a trainer whose father saddled the winner in 2005.
There are many with chances, but the likely favourite is DAWN APPROACH, son of the Derby winner NEW APPROACH and trained by the shrewd Jim Bolger. He has won all of his three starts to date including a listed race most recently. He will go on the ground and looks to have plenty of speed and stamina, as well as good attitude and work ethic. It must be noted that only RED CLUBS has taken this race having raced more than twice in recent years. However, DAWN APPROACH looks a very promising colt who looks to have the credentials to buck this trend.

S1-5 Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
The Ascot Stakes is a very tough handicap to weigh up and is a real test of stamina for its large field of runners. Nicky Henderson saddled Veiled to win the race last year, and the mare will be back to defend her crown this year.
They could all meet their match though, with David Simcock’s AL KHAWANEEJ , who is chasing a four timer. He is an absolutely colossal horse and looks an incredibly strong galloper. The track and trip are likely to suit and he looks to have plenty of scope to rise up the weights even further.

S1-6 Windsor Castle Stakes
While the favourite FREDERICK ENGELS took the 2011 renewal of the Windsor Castle Stakes, there have been huge priced winners of this in recent years, so it’s worth an eye on looking at some from further down in the betting. While Richard Hannon has good records in the Coventry Stakes amongst other graded sprinting contests, he is without a victory in this particular one. He could be represented by ALHEBAYEB. This grey made a winning debut and is sure to be popular amongst punters here. Hannon could also saddle ASK DAD, who will be looking to improve on his first start, where he finished second.
Mick Channon has trained two winners of this race, and his dual winner BUNGLE INTHEJUNGLE must come into consideration. After finishing behind a number of subsequent winners in the maiden won by ENGLISHMAN on debut, he has shown a likeable attitude in his two victories since.
Another with a chance is LIBER, who stuck on well to fill the third spot in the Listed Woodcote Stakes on Derby day. He struggled on the undulating Epsom track so deserves credit for his performance, and could have a part to play back on a fairer track, who is also back in trip.
