Racing Incident Report

STRAIGHT VICTORY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped KINGS CROSS. At the 900 Metres, CRYSTAL raced tight inside EGYPTIAN RA. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, CRYSTAL was carried wider by SKYVIEW BAR which shifted out behind EGYPTIAN RA. Making the Home Turn, SKYVIEW BAR hung out. At the 350 Metres, D Whyte (WINNING BULLET) dropped his whip. At the 300 Metres, E Saint-Martin (RIVER JORDAN) dropped his whip. Also at the 300 Metres, NOBLE SILENCE was bumped when crowded for room between PRIMIATA which initially shifted out and CIRCULAR MACHINE which shifted in when hanging. CIRCULAR MACHINE continued to hang in over the concluding stages. B Prebble (EGYPTIAN RA) said the horse had always shown itself to be a difficult ride and from the outside barrier today he had been given open instructions on how to ride the horse other than he should do his utmost to have the horse travel kindly. He said EGYPTIAN RA began well, he allowed it to travel in the bridle where it was initially able to obtain cover. He said at the 1000 Metres when left racing without cover EGYPTIAN RA commenced to race keenly and he therefore decided to allow the horse to roll to the lead to ensure it travelled comfortably. When questioned, Apprentice H W Lai (CIRCULAR MACHINE) said he had been instructed by Mr C S Shum, trainer of the horse, to let the horse jump, then not to ride along in the early stages because the horse has previously shown a tendency to pull. He said he was told to allow the horse to relax and save it for a closing run in the Home Straight. He said in accordance with those instructions, he did not ride CIRCULAR MACHINE along in the early stages but rather took it back to ensure it had a position with cover in the hope that the horse would relax. He said he was aware this meant he would travel much further back than was normal for the horse, however, having in mind his instructions he was not concerned as the pace of the race in his opinion was satisfactory. He said in the Home Straight CIRCULAR MACHINE closed the race off fairly, however, did hang in and proved difficult to ride. The Stewards will interview Mr Shum before concluding this matter. RIVER JORDAN and EGYPTIAN RA were sent for sampling.
