<9/12/2020 29 November 2020 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 1 (221)>The Stewards tonight concluded the inquiry into the reason for LUCKY FUN stumbling near the 450 Metres and dislodging its rider M Chadwick. Evidence was tonight taken from Jockey Chadwick. M Chadwick explained that when GOKO improved outside LUCKY FUN, which was having its first start in this race, LUCKY FUN commenced to travel keenly and improved of its own accord to be racing close to the heels of MULTIMORE. This resulted in LUCKY FUN clipping the heels of MULTIMORE near the 450 Metres and stumbling which caused him to be dislodged from the horse. M Chadwick was of the opinion that there was no error or carelessness exhibited by any rider in this incident which led to him being dislodged. After considering Jockey Chadwick’s evidence and viewing the films, the Stewards concurred with Jockey Chadwick’s assessment and accordingly no further action was taken.

HONGKONG GREAT, which was following ALL FOR SOUTH, got its head up when being checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence. B Shinn was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 9 December 2020 and to expire on Monday, 14 December 2020 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Shinn’s good race riding record.
Making the turn near the 600 Metres, ALL FOR SOUTH got its head on the side and shifted out. ACA POWER, which was following, shifted out away from the heels of that horse, resulting in HONGKONG GREAT being hampered and taken wider. After this, both ALL FOR SOUTH and HONGKONG GREAT travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MASTER HERO, J Moreira stated that the horse, which was stepping up in distance to 1600 Metres today, over-raced for some distance in the early and middle stages. He said it was not until after the 700 Metres that MASTER HERO commenced to settle better and after shifting to the outside of PAKISTAN FRIEND passing the 500 Metres initially quickened satisfactorily. He said however that MASTER HERO came under pressure after the 300 Metres and after initially staying on one-paced then gave ground over the final 200 Metres to finish at the rear of the field. He added that in his opinion MASTER HERO’s failure to settle in the early stages was the principal reason for it not being able to finish off the race, particularly given that the horse was up in distance. A veterinary inspection of MASTER HERO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MASTER HERO, favourite for today’s race and which finished near the rear of the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MASTER HERO will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Near the 75 Metres, SUPER OASIS was awkwardly placed outside the heels of LUCKY EXPRESS.
Throughout the race, KING OPIE travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, N Callan stated that in pre-race discussions with the connections of FAST MOST FURIOUS, it was felt that BUDDIES would likely lead the race with KINGS SHIELD, the other likely pace influence, taking a sit off BUDDIES. He said it was therefore felt that the race may not be run at a good tempo even though BUDDIES was engaged in the race. He said he was therefore given two sets of instructions depending on how FAST MOST FURIOUS began. He said he was told that if the horse began well, he should take advantage of that and obtain a forward position preferably behind the leaders so that if the race was not run at a good tempo, FAST MOST FURIOUS would not have too much to do. He said alternatively, if the horse did not begin well from the wide barrier, he was instructed to shift it across behind runners and obtain a trailing position. He said when FAST MOST FURIOUS began well, in accordance with his first set of instructions, he rode the horse positively in the early stages and was able to obtain a good position behind the speed.
SKY DARCI and LUCKY EXPRESS were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (228) CHEVALIER LIFTS & ESCALATORS HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m

ARMANDO was withdrawn on 28.11.20 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter ROYAL BOMB (B Shinn). Before being allowed to race again, ARMANDO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
BLAZING BEAT was crowded for room on jumping between LOCKHEED and WAR OF COURAGE which shifted out.
ROYAL CAMPBELL shifted out abruptly at the start, resulting in ROYAL BOMB being crowded for room inside LIKE THAT. In this incident, both ROYAL CAMPBELL and LIKE THAT became unbalanced. When unbalanced, ROYAL CAMPBELL then shifted in and hampered SEA OF LIFE which began awkwardly. A short distance later, SEA OF LIFE was momentarily crowded for room between STARZ HERO and ROYAL CAMPBELL which shifted in. After this, ROYAL BOMB was steadied to obtain cover.
Passing the 1100 Metres, ROYAL BOMB shifted in and bumped SEA OF LIFE.
Passing the 1000 Metres, ROYAL CAMPBELL was steadied away from the heels of LIKE THAT (A Badel) which shifted in. A Badel was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes more effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground and causing interference to other runners.
Passing the 900 Metres, ROYAL CAMPBELL was left racing wide and without cover.
SEA OF LIFE made the turn approaching the 800 Metres awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced ROYAL BOMB. SEA OF LIFE then shifted in, resulting in BELUGA being momentarily awkwardly placed inside the heels of that horse.
Passing the 800 Metres, STARZ HERO got its head up when travelling keenly and being checked away from the heels of ROYAL CAMPBELL.
Also passing the 800 Metres, BLAZING BEAT got its head up when awkwardly placed behind WAR OF COURAGE. BLAZING BEAT continued to prove difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed behind WAR OF COURAGE for some distance.
BIG FORTUNE had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Approaching the 100 Metres, WAR OF COURAGE lay out, requiring its rider to change his whip over into his left hand passing the 100 Metres.
When questioned, V Borges stated that he was instructed to shift BELUGA across behind runners from the wide barrier in the early stages to obtain cover which it was believed would be towards the rear of the field. He said he was asked to shift BELUGA to the outside of runners in the Straight if possible to allow the horse the best opportunity to finish off the race. He said after shifting BELUGA across towards the rear of the field in the early stages in accordance with his instructions, he was following BLAZING BEAT and SEA OF LIFE after the 500 Metres. He said although there was an opportunity to improve his position inside SEA OF LIFE, he was concerned that improving his position at this time would make it difficult for him to shift to the outside of runners in the Straight and therefore he elected not to improve to the inside of SEA OF LIFE but rather to direct BELUGA to the outside of SEA OF LIFE approaching the 400 Metres with a view to shifting further to the outside of STARZ HERO. He said however he had to direct BELUGA in near the 350 Metres when unable to obtain clear running behind SEA OF LIFE and STARZ HERO and inside ROYAL BOMB. He said after directing to the inside of SEA OF LIFE, he immediately commenced riding his mount along with a view to improving into tight running which was available between ROYAL CAMPBELL and SEA OF LIFE, however, BELUGA was crowded for room near the 100 Metres between SEA OF LIFE and JUNEAU PARK, both of which shifted ground. He said this resulted in BELUGA not being able to be properly tested. V Borges added that in retrospect BELUGA’s interests would have been better served by improving to the inside of SEA OF LIFE and following JUNEAU PARK through rather than attempting to come to the outside of SEA OF LIFE, however, he reiterated that he was attempting to comply with his instructions to get BELUGA to the outside of runners in the early part of the Straight if possible.
A veterinary inspection of JUNEAU PARK immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
TEAM SPIRIT and LOCKHEED were sent for sampling.

Race:9 (229) CHEVALIER PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT & OPERATIONS HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1600 m

GREAT TREASURE began only fairly.
RUBY STARS began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, resulting in MR ALDAN being checked and losing ground and TEMPEST EXPRESS becoming unbalanced after being bumped by RUBY STARS. After this, when being steadied to obtain cover, RUBY STARS travelled very keenly. RUBY STARS, which was wearing blinkers for the first time in Hong Kong, continued to prove very difficult to settle and passing the 1000 Metres was left racing wide and without cover.
From a wide barrier, LEGION OF MERIT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Over the concluding stages, AWE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ROMANTIC COMBO.
V Borges stated that he was instructed to ride ROMANTIC COMBO in about midfield or slightly better than midfield given that the horse was better drawn than it had been recently. He said however that ROMANTIC COMBO began very well without him riding the horse along and then when being steadied shortly after the start to obtain a trailing position with cover proved very difficult to settle and would not relax. He said he attempted for a considerable distance to steady ROMANTIC COMBO, however, the horse would not respond and continued to travel very strongly which resulted in ROMANTIC COMBO being positioned much further forward than had been anticipated. He said after the 800 Metres he was racing in a one-off position and then near the 700 Metres raced tight with PERFECT TO GREAT as a result of him maintaining his position one horse off the rail. He said he was reluctant to be taken in to the rail given that the race was being run at a good tempo and he did not want to be boxed in rounding the turn and in the Straight if the leaders commenced to give ground.
After the race, N Callan (PERFECT TO GREAT) stated that after racing wide and without cover outside ROMANTIC COMBO from the 900 Metres, his mount came under pressure rounding the Home Turn and then did not finish off the race.
When questioned, A Hamelin stated that, from the wide barrier, he was asked to ride TEMPEST EXPRESS in a forward position given that the horse was wearing blinkers for the first time in Hong Kong. He said he was able to obtain a forward position without having to make any use of TEMPEST EXPRESS, however, when clearing runners to his inside, TEMPEST EXPRESS commenced to travel keenly and after crossing ROMANTIC COMBO to race outside the lead approaching the 1000 Metres, the horse would not relax and got its head up on a number of occasions as he attempted to steady his mount to sit off the leader BEAUTY DAY. He added TEMPEST EXPRESS would not relax throughout the middle stages which resulted in the horse not being able to finish off the race.
N Callan pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct under Rule 155(5) in that within the Jockeys’ Room he directed offensive language towards V Borges in the presence of other jockeys and a Stipendiary Steward. After considering all the circumstances of this case, the Stewards were of the opinion that the appropriate penalty was for Jockey Callan to be fined a sum of $25,000.
A veterinary inspection of MR ALDAN immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
A veterinary inspection of PERFECT TO GREAT and RUBY STARS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CHEVALIER PRINCE and UNCLE STEVE were sent for sampling.

Approaching the 500 Metres, BEAUTY RUSH shifted out and brushed HAPPY FUN.
Passing the 500 Metres, TEMPLE OF HEAVEN raced tight outside HEALTHY HAPPY which improved to the outside of HAPPY FUN.
ENRICH DELIGHT was badly held up for clear running from on straightening until passing the 200 Metres.
SHADOW HERO had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and passing the 200 Metres.
Passing the 200 Metres, HAPPY FUN, which was commencing to give ground, was crowded for room between ENRICH DELIGHT which, when improving into tight running inside HEALTHY HAPPY, was taken in marginally by that horse and BEAUTY RUSH which, after being brushed by BALLISTIC KING, then got its head on the side and shifted away from that horse. After this, BEAUTY RUSH continued to lay out and passing the 150 Metres was steadied when racing in restricted room between BALLISTIC KING and ENRICH DELIGHT. As the Stewards were satisfied that the crowding to HAPPY FUN was not as a result of any carelessness exhibited by any rider, no further action was taken.
Over the concluding stages, BEAUTY LEGACY raced tight outside HEALTHY HAPPY which was racing tight outside the heels of ENRICH DELIGHT which shifted out under pressure.
A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY RUSH and TEMPLE OF HEAVEN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
HEALTHY HAPPY, ENRICH DELIGHT and BALLISTIC KING were sent for sampling.
<30/11/2020 Additional Veterinary Report>TEMPLE OF HEAVEN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings.
