Race:1 (286) NEPTUNE HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1650 m

On jumping, JOY N FUN LEGEND, WONDER BRAHMA and KEEP WINNING were crowded for room between PERFECT TO PLAY which shifted in and PRETTY BAUHINIA which got its head on the side and shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider.
From wide barriers, SHINEALOT, VIRTUS STAR, BRAVERY AND POWER and NITRO EXPRESS, which jumped awkwardly, were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After racing in restricted room for some distance in the early stages inside the heels of PERFECT TO PLAY (J Moreira), JOY N FUN LEGEND was steadied approaching the 1300 Metres when PERFECT TO PLAY shifted in. J Moreira was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he affords runners to his inside comfortable racing room. When JOY N FUN LEGEND was steadied, VIRTUS STAR, which was being shifted in behind that horse, was checked and directed out away from the heels of JOY N FUN LEGEND to prevent causing tightening to BRAVERY AND POWER.
Approaching the 150 Metres, WINNERS BROTHER, which was giving ground, was checked when tightened for room between KEEP WINNING (M L Yeung) which shifted in slightly under pressure and PRETTY BAUHINIA which was required to shift out away from the heels of WONDER BRAHMA (M F Poon) which shifted ground under pressure. Both M L Yeung and M F Poon were reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances they would be expected to keep their mounts straighter than they did on this occasion.
C Soumillon, the rider of NITRO EXPRESS, was reminded of the requirement under the Rules to refrain from using his whip forward of the saddle.
When questioned regarding his riding of HAPPY HOUR, particularly why he did not pull the whip on that horse over the latter stages, Z Purton stated that rounding the Home Turn he slapped HAPPY HOUR down the shoulder with the whip in order to have it make up ground and to close off the race. He said in the early part of the Straight he initially intended to shift to the outside of WONDER BRAHMA, however, when that horse shifted out under pressure, he continued to improve inside that horse before directing HAPPY HOUR out around the heels of PERFECT TO PLAY after passing the 200 Metres. He said he then placed HAPPY HOUR under full pressure and slapped the horse down the shoulder with his whip on several occasions, however, HAPPY HOUR was inclined to shift out slightly and as he felt that the horse was giving of its best, he continued to ride it in this fashion to the end of the race rather than pull the whip as he believed that had he have done this HAPPY HOUR would have shifted out and compromised its winning chance.
After the race, M F Poon stated that WONDER BRAHMA tended to race keenly in the early stages and as a consequence was not able to finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of WONDER BRAHMA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
PERFECT TO PLAY and HAPPY HOUR were sent for sampling.

After the race, Apprentice C L Chau reported that in accordance with his instructions he rode PAKISTAN FRIEND along in an endeavour to take up a forward position, however, the horse did not show any early speed which required him to shift across behind runners to obtain cover to avoid racing wide and without cover. He said as a consequence PAKISTAN FRIEND raced much further back in the field than was intended.
When questioned, A Badel stated that he was instructed to ride RUN THE TABLE positively in the early stages and take up a forward position and then hopefully be able to obtain cover which would assist the horse’s winning chances. He said however that after being left racing outside ALL BEST FRIENDS without cover approaching the 1300 Metres, RUN THE TABLE commenced to race keenly and would not settle. He said RUN THE TABLE continued to race keenly throughout the middle stages and would not relax and as a consequence failed to finish off the race and was disappointing. He added after the race he suggested to connections that they consider dropping the horse back in distance as it may be better suited with a stronger tempo. A veterinary inspection of RUN THE TABLE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of RUN THE TABLE, a last start winner and a favoured runner in tonight’s event, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, RUN THE TABLE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Then for some distance after this, UNITED WE STAND got its head up and travelled keenly when being steadied when it remained awkwardly placed inside the heels of HAPPY GOOD GUYS (C Soumillon) which shifted in slightly. C Soumillon was advised that whilst the racing manners of UNITED WE STAND had exacerbated the incident and that near the 700 Metres he was not in a position to relieve the tightening due to HAPPILY FRIENDS racing tight to its outside, nonetheless in similar circumstances he would be expected to afford runners to his inside comfortable racing room.
VIVA CHEF raced wide and without cover from the 800 Metres.

When questioned, C Schofield stated that SUPER AXIOM began very well and was initially shifting in to settle outside the early leader GRATEFUL HEART, however, near the 1100 Metres the horse gave him the impression that it may attempt to buck and then started to travel very strongly. He said whilst he would have preferred steadying and racing outside of GRATEFUL HEART, he felt obliged to allow SUPER AXIOM to roll forward of that horse in the hope that it would settle better. He said however that SUPER AXIOM then took charge along the Back Straight and raced far too keenly which he knew would affect its finishing effort. He said the horse settled better after the 600 Metres, however, came off the bridle approaching the Home Turn and then felt very awkward in its action. He added the manner in which SUPER AXIOM then weakened badly in the Straight could be attributed to it failing to settle in the early and middle stages. When SUPER AXIOM was weakening in the Straight, LOVING A BOOM made ground quickly behind that horse and was severely checked away from the heels of SUPER AXIOM approaching the 150 Metres. A veterinary inspection of SUPER AXIOM immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in both hind legs. The performance of SUPER AXIOM, a winner of its only start and a favourite for tonight’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER AXIOM will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

From a wide barrier, HELENE WISDOM STAR was shifted across behind runners soon after the start.
At the 1200 Metres, HELENE WISDOM STAR was steadied when crowded for room between NAMJONG PLUS which was being steadied in an endeavour to obtain cover and SAVAQUIN which shifted out slightly.
When racing very wide after the 1200 Metres, PRIME MINISTER commenced to race keenly due to the slow tempo. When the tempo steadied further approaching the 1000 Metres, PRIME MINISTER was then allowed to improve its position around the field to settle outside the leader REEL BIZZY at the 700 Metres.

M Chadwick (CALIFORNIADEEPSHOT) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 550 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in, initiating contact with GOLDEN DASH and that from that stage of the race he positioned his mount to be racing unnecessarily tight outside GOLDEN DASH and shifting in to a point where that horse was crowded, became badly unbalanced and lost ground at the 450 Metres. As a consequence, SHINING GEM was severely checked away from the heels of GOLDEN DASH as it lost ground. HONG KONG WIN, which was following SHINING GEM, was obliged to shift out away from the heels of that horse and was inconvenienced. General

1.

After the running of Race 6, the track classification was officially changed from "Good” to "Good to Firm”. This change in the opinion of the Stewards should be recorded as being retrospective. As a consequence of this, the official results will show Race 6 being run on a track rated "Good to Firm”.

2. 20 December 2020 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 9 (284)

After reviewing the videos of this race, the Stewards felt it was appropriate to question H T Mo regarding his riding of SUPER ELEGANCE in the early part of the Straight. H T Mo stated that after settling at the rear of the field, he was obliged to commence riding the horse along with the whip after the 700 Metres in order for the horse to make up ground. He said SUPER ELEGANCE consequently commenced to travel better, however, at the 600 Metres he was obliged to shift out away from the heels of SACRED IBIS when that horse was checked. He said after being steadied away from the heels of SACRED IBIS, SUPER ELEGANCE dropped the bit and then was left flat-footed when the runners immediately in advance of his mount, namely SACRED IBIS and PRECISE EXPRESS, accelerated. He said whilst it was open to him to immediately shift wider on the track to provide SUPER ELEGANCE with unimpeded running, given the horse was some lengths off SACRED IBIS, he continued to ride his mount along before shifting to the outside of both SACRED IBIS and PRECISE EXPRESS near the 200 Metres with SUPER ELEGANCE then closing off the race well. Jockey Mo was advised the Stewards would report his explanation, however, they felt that after shifting out from behind SACRED IBIS and trailing PRECISE EXPRESS rounding the Home Turn, he should have continued to direct his mount to the outside of PRECISE EXPRESS to afford his mount unimpeded running at an earlier stage.
