DIAMOND PIXIU was withdrawn on 8.1.21 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (fever) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter ZONE D. Before being allowed to race again, DIAMOND PIXIU will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
STRATHMARTINE began only fairly.
MISTER ARM began awkwardly.
After being a little slow to begin, COMFORT LIFE was inconvenienced soon after the start by LUCKY FUN which shifted in.
BRANDING POWER and SILVERY WARRIOR made contact soon after the start.
From wide barriers, ZONE D and SUNDAY BETTING were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
When racing close to the heels of ON EXCEL STAR making the turn near the 900 Metres, BRANDING POWER got its head up and made the turn awkwardly.
After leaving the 900 Metres, ON EXCEL STAR was left racing wide and without cover.
Approaching the 800 Metres, LUCKY FUN got its head up when being steadied to allow MISTER ARM (H T Mo) to cross. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of LUCKY FUN had largely contributed to the incident by over-reacting when steadied, H T Mo was nonetheless reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of LUCKY FUN.
Rounding the Home Turn, UNIVERSAL CROWN was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ZONE D which was shifting out to obtain clear running and was then corrected at the entrance to the Straight to prevent causing interference to UNIVERSAL CROWN.
A veterinary inspection of COMFORT LIFE immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm and an endoscopic examination also found it to have bled from both nostrils. Before being allowed to race again, COMFORT LIFE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race:2 (327) SAU MAU PING HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1400 m

GENERAL CASTLEDALE began awkwardly and got its head up on jumping.
EVER STRONG shifted out at the start and made contact with LITTLE GENERAL.
FUN TIMES jumped out at the start and bumped CITY LEGEND.
After bumping at the start, VICTORIOUS LEADER and FRESH POWER, from the outside barriers, were steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Approaching the 1300 Metres, CITY LEGEND (Apprentice C L Chau) shifted in and made contact with FUN TIMES. Then due to contact on its hindquarters, CITY LEGEND continued to lay in despite the efforts of its rider to alleviate the tightening to FUN TIMES which was checked. Apprentice Chau was severely reprimanded and advised that the Stewards acknowledged that CITY LEGEND’s racing manners had played a part in this incident, nonetheless he must exercise more care when shifting ground.
For some distance approaching the 900 Metres, CITY LEGEND commenced to prove difficult to settle and got its head up when being steadied.
At the 500 Metres, CITY LEGEND was awkwardly placed near the heels of CALIFORNIA LEGEND when being shifted to the outside of that horse.
Passing the 300 Metres, GENERAL CASTLEDALE became badly unbalanced when bumped by WONDER EXPRESS which, after shifting out and racing tight with GENERAL CASTLEDALE, then received momentary pressure from COPARTNER ERA (A Badel) which shifted out and made contact with WONDER EXPRESS before being corrected. A Badel was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Passing the 200 Metres, VICTORIOUS LEADER was checked when disappointed for running between TINKER BELLE and MONEYMORE which shifted in. The Stewards were satisfied that VICTORIOUS LEADER had not established running to the inside of the heels of MONEYMORE prior to that horse shifting ground. VICTORIOUS LEADER remained badly held up behind MONEYMORE and was not able to be tested for the remainder of the event.
Also passing the 200 Metres, EVER STRONG was steadied away from the heels of CALIFORNIA LEGEND which shifted in when racing tight inside CITY LEGEND which was inclined to lay in under pressure.
For some distance after leaving the 200 Metres, TINKER BELLE was very awkwardly placed inside VICTORIOUS LEADER due to contact on the hindquarters from that runner.
A Badel (COPARTNER ERA) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 175 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out around the heels of CITY LEGEND when not clear of WONDER EXPRESS, resulting in that horse being checked. A Badel was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 17 January 2021 and to expire on Thursday, 21 January 2021 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Badel’s good race riding record.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that although WONDER EXPRESS struck interference in the Straight, the horse was well beaten at that stage. He said WONDER EXPRESS came under heavy pressure in the early part of the Straight and failed to provide any response. A veterinary inspection of WONDER EXPRESS immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, WONDER EXPRESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of FUN TIMES and LITTLE GENERAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CALIFORNIA LEGEND, COPARTNER ERA and CITY LEGEND were sent for sampling.

Throughout the race, LUCKY TURBO travelled wide and without cover.
After the race, H W Lai reported that MOON PEAKS did not appear to handle the All Weather track at its first start on the surface. A veterinary inspection of MOON PEAKS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Race:4 (329) NGAU CHI WAN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1400 m

QUICK REPLY jumped in at the start and bumped JOYFUL HEART which in turn shifted in and made heavy contact with the hindquarters of LIGHT OF WANSHI which in turn resulted in VECTOR being crowded to its inside.
From the outside barrier, GOLDEN FOUR was steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
From a wide barrier, WINNING STEED was also steadied soon after the start to obtain cover.
Leaving the 700 Metres, LIGHT OF WANSHI was steadied away from the heels of JOYFUL HEART.
After leaving the 600 Metres, SUPERB DADDY raced tight between WINNING STEED and JOYFUL HEART which improved to the outside of the heels of MULTIPLE STAR. Then at the entrance to the Straight, WINNING STEED was bumped by SUPERB DADDY (N Callan) which shifted to the outside of the heels of PEARL CHAMPION to improve. N Callan was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 100 Metres, LIGHT OF WANSHI was steadied when tightened for room between UNIVERSAL RECORD and SUPERB DADDY which shifted in under pressure. N Callan was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that GREEN ENVY had not displayed a lot of pace in its earlier races, however, at its last start the horse was able to jump well and take advantage of an inside barrier in Class 5 company. He said with the horse being up in class today and from an awkward barrier, he was not issued with any specific instructions, therefore he rode GREEN ENVY from the barriers and immediately assessed whether it was available for him to find a position forward of midfield. He said when a number of runners to his inside were ridden for speed, he elected to steady GREEN ENVY to obtain cover rather than run the risk of being exposed and racing wide and without cover. He said he was able to shift in and obtain cover behind SUPERB DADDY in the early stages and GREEN ENVY travelled well throughout the middle stages. He added after being brought to the outside immediately upon straightening, GREEN ENVY closed off the race well.
After the race, Z Purton stated that after racing wide and without cover from passing the 900 Metres, WINNING STEED lost balance when bumped by SUPERB DADDY on straightening. He said although he was then obliged to steady WINNING STEED away from the heels of SUPERB DADDY when that horse shifted out again under pressure at the 300 Metres, WINNING STEED was a beaten horse at the time and did not close off the race. A veterinary inspection of WINNING STEED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GREEN ENVY, SPEED FAY FAY and PEARL CHAMPION were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (330) KWUN TONG HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1000 m

LIKE THAT and NOBLE DESIRE were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (331) NGAU TAU KOK HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1600 m

RUN RUN GOOD was checked and lost ground on jumping when crowded for room between RED MAJESTY which jumped out and LEADING FORTUNE which shifted in after being bumped heavily by FAMILY LEADER which began very awkwardly.
ALL FOR ST PAUL’S shifted out at the start, inconveniencing DECISIVE ACTION and PAKISTAN FRIEND.
From wide barriers, APOLAR WARRIOR, RAINBOW LIGHT and STUNNING IMPACT were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
At the 1000 Metres, FAMILY LEADER was left racing wide and without cover.
When the pace steadied near the 800 Metres, LIGHT MY DAY shifted out off the heels of RED MAJESTY and consequently raced wide and without cover throughout the middle stages.
RAINBOW LIGHT lost its right front plate on the Home Turn.
An inquiry was conducted into an incident which occurred approaching and passing the 300 Metres where RUN RUN GOOD and BRAVE POWER were severely checked when badly crowded for room between APOLAR WARRIOR (M L Yeung) and FAMILY LEADER, both of which were also badly hampered as a consequence of contact with RUN RUN GOOD and BRAVE POWER respectively. It was established that approaching the 300 Metres BRAVE POWER raced tight between RUN RUN GOOD and FAMILY LEADER and made contact with the hindquarters of FAMILY LEADER which, passing the 300 Metres, was then taken in by LEADING FORTUNE (A Badel) which shifted in when not properly clear, causing initial crowding to BRAVE POWER and RUN RUN GOOD. It was further established that after passing the 300 Metres APOLAR WARRIOR, which was attempting to improve to the outside of the heels of LIGHT MY DAY, then became very awkwardly placed due to LIGHT MY DAY shifting out slightly when brushed by DECISIVE ACTION which improved into tight running between LIGHT MY DAY and ALL FOR ST PAUL’S. As a consequence of being very awkwardly placed near the heels of LIGHT MY DAY which was giving ground quickly, APOLAR WARRIOR was checked and shifted out further, resulting in severe crowding to RUN RUN GOOD and BRAVE POWER. In all the circumstances, A Badel was severely reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to make more of an effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground than he did on this occasion. M L Yeung was also advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that his mount had been very awkwardly placed near the heels of LIGHT MY DAY which shifted out as it was weakening, in similar circumstances he would be expected to do all in his power to prevent shifting ground and causing interference to other runners.
Approaching the 200 Metres, JIMMU was checked when disappointed for a run inside ALL FOR ST PAUL’S which, after shifting out marginally, then shifted back in under pressure. The Stewards were satisfied that in this incident JIMMU had not established running to the inside of ALL FOR ST PAUL’S prior to that horse shifting in.
V Borges (PAKISTAN FRIEND) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 150 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in under pressure when not clear of DECISIVE ACTION, resulting in that horse being checked. V Borges was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 24 January 2021 and to expire on Thursday, 28 January 2021 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Borges’ good race riding record.
When questioned, K C Leung stated that he was forced to ride ALL FOR ST PAUL’S vigorously in the early stages for it to take up a forward position in accordance with the horse’s normal racing pattern. He said after assuming the lead after the 1400 Metres, ALL FOR ST PAUL’S then travelled satisfactorily throughout the middle stages. He said however that ALL FOR ST PAUL’S soon came under pressure in the early part of the Straight and then was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to close off the race. He added that after the race he suggested to connections that they might consider giving the horse a freshen-up as it might have been affected by some tough runs of late. Trainer F C Lor stated that he felt that with top weight, ALL FOR ST PAUL’S had to work hard in the early stages to take up the lead and this had, in his view, taken its toll on the horse’s finishing performance. He said however that in light of ALL FOR ST PAUL’S’ disappointing run and also the advice from Jockey Leung, it had been decided to give the horse a freshen-up. A veterinary inspection of ALL FOR ST PAUL’S immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of BRAVE POWER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of DECISIVE ACTION immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, DECISIVE ACTION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
DECISIVE ACTION, LEADING FORTUNE and CHEERFUL DAYS were sent for sampling.

TORNADO TWIST began only fairly.
Soon after the start, KING’S CAPITAL was bumped by PRESIDENT’S CHOICE which shifted in.
For some distance approaching the first turn near the 900 Metres, CIRCUIT SIX got its head up and raced fiercely when being restrained away from the heels of PRIVATE ROCKET which was shifting in to obtain cover behind JUST NOT LISTENING. The Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of CIRCUIT SIX were the primary cause of this incident.
At the 400 Metres, KING’S CAPITAL was inconvenienced when taken out by MERIDIAN GENIUS which shifted out to improve.
Over the final 100 Metres, MERIDIAN GENIUS raced tight inside KING’S CAPITAL which shifted in under pressure.
Throughout the race, JUST NOT LISTENING travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
A veterinary inspection of PRESIDENT’S CHOICE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

When questioned, C Schofield stated that he had ridden SUPER POWER MAN in some of its work and, in his view, the horse does not seem to be going as well as it did last season when he was riding it. He said in today’s race he had to make a lot of use of SUPER POWER MAN to take up a forward position, however, the horse was always under pressure and subsequently weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of SUPER POWER MAN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, Apprentice C L Chau stated that he was asked to ride KEEP YOU WARM as close to the lead as possible, however, the horse did not show any early speed despite being ridden along and was inclined to lay in. He said KEEP YOU WARM was then disappointing in its failure to finish off the race in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of KEEP YOU WARM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HARMONY AND RICH and EXCEED THE STARS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of SUPER ALLIANCES immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg and an endoscopic examination also showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. CHATER PINS was held up for clear running from approaching the 200 Metres until after passing the 150 Metres.
BEAUTY DAY shifted out under pressure and raced tight with ENTRUSTED close to the finishing line.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that, from a favourable barrier, CHEVALIER PRINCE jumped well and put itself into a good position behind the pace. He said after being directed out around the heels of the leaders at the entrance to the Straight, he anticipated that CHEVALIER PRINCE would close off the race strongly, however, the horse did not let down as he expected and then was disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground over the final 200 Metres. A veterinary inspection of CHEVALIER PRINCE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. The performance of CHEVALIER PRINCE, second favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CHEVALIER PRINCE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the race, Apprentice C Wong reported that with blinkers on today, he was instructed to ride A A AGILITY into a forward position. He said after doing some work to settle outside the leader SMOOTHIES, A A AGILITY came under heavy pressure prior to the Home Turn and then weakened badly in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of A A AGILITY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of A A AGILITY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, A A AGILITY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, Trainer P O’Sullivan stated that CASIMIRO had shown versatility in its recent racing and on 14 November 2020 it had been able to win in Class 4 company when ridden from near the tail of the field. He said up in class today and with barrier 10 he felt there was risk of CASIMIRO being caught racing wide and without cover if it were to be ridden forward, therefore he instructed Jockey V Borges to steady CASIMIRO and find cover in the hope that it would be able to close off the race. A veterinary inspection of CASIMIRO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
SUPER FOOTBALL and BEAUTY DAY were sent for sampling.

Race:10 (335) CHOI HUNG HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 2 1400 m

BEAUTY JOY and ENRICH DELIGHT were slow to begin.
RACING FIGHTER got its head up on jumping and was then steadied and shifted across behind runners.
From a wide barrier, PRECIOUSSHIP was also steadied and shifted across behind runners soon after the start.
When travelling keenly approaching the turn near the 900 Metres, BEAUTY SMILE shifted out off the heels of TSAR, resulting in WINNING METHOD, which was travelling very wide and without cover, being forced wider still. WINNING METHOD continued to race wide and without cover throughout the middle stages and consequently gave ground in the Straight.
Making the turn after the 900 Metres, BEAUTY JOY got its head up and was awkwardly placed behind NOT USUAL TALENT.
At the 350 Metres, ENRICH DELIGHT was disappointed for running between AMAZING CHOCOLATE and BAND OF BROTHERS which shifted out after being brushed by LUCKY PATCH which improved into tight running between BEAUTY LEGACY and BAND OF BROTHERS. ENRICH DELIGHT remained held up until approaching the 200 Metres.
Approaching the 100 Metres, WINNING METHOD was steadied when tightened for room between EXCELLENT PROPOSAL which shifted in slightly and PRECIOUSSHIP which improved to the outside of the tiring AMAZING CHOCOLATE.
Throughout the race, AMAZING CHOCOLATE travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that he was asked to ride BEAUTY SMILE with cover if possible and it was anticipated that this would be in midfield or slightly in advance of midfield. He said he rode his mount along in the early stages to assess whether he might be able to shift in and obtain cover, however, when a number of runners maintained their position to his inside, this initially resulted in BEAUTY SMILE racing four wide albeit with cover behind AMAZING CHOCOLATE. He said therefore he steadied BEAUTY SMILE and shifted in to race behind TSAR which resulted in the horse settling slightly further back than had been intended.
When questioned regarding the performance of EXCELLENT PROPOSAL, J Moreira stated that in accordance with the horse’s normal racing pattern, he did not ride it along in the early stages, hoping to find cover near midfield. He said after leaving the 1200 Metres he shifted in to race one horse away from the rail on the back of ENRICH DELIGHT with EXCELLENT PROPOSAL then travelling comfortably through the middle stages. He said however he was obliged to commence riding EXCELLENT PROPOSAL along approaching the Home Turn to remain racing on the back of ENRICH DELIGHT and immediately upon straightening he shifted the horse out around the heels of WINNING METHOD and gained a clear run. He added EXCELLENT PROPOSAL gave only a limited response and then was disappointing in its failure to close off the race as it normally does. He added on pulling up EXCELLENT PROPOSAL appeared normal in its action and he could detect no abnormalities with the horse. Trainer J Size explained that EXCELLENT PROPOSAL had pleased him in its track work and barrier trials leading into today’s race and the only excuse he could offer was that the horse was racing first up after a break of more than three months. A veterinary inspection of EXCELLENT PROPOSAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of WINNING METHOD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of AMAZING CHOCOLATE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
NOT USUAL TALENT and LUCKY PATCH were sent for sampling.
