A short distance after the start, UNTOLD RICHES raced tight outside HARD PROMISE which shifted out.
From wide barriers, SEA MONARCH, AMAZING KNIGHT and FA FA were all steadied to obtain cover in the early stages.
Despite being ridden along for a considerable distance in the early stages, CALIFORNIA GUNGHO failed to muster speed.
Making the first turn near the 700 Metres, HARD PROMISE, which was being vigorously ridden to maintain its position, was steadied away from the heels of UNTOLD RICHES which was racing tight inside HAPPY TANGO (J Moreira). J Moreira was told to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances.
FA FA made the turn after the 700 Metres awkwardly.
For the majority of the race, H Z TOURBILLON travelled wide and without cover and near the 500 Metres was shifted out away from the heels of HARD PROMISE as a result of that horse shifting out.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of UNTOLD RICHES, Z Purton stated that he had ridden the horse in its two barrier trials in the lead up to today’s race and he was satisfied with the manner in which it finished off those trials. He said at its most recent trial UNTOLD RICHES was inclined to lay in, but this did not cause him any concern. He said after beginning only fairly today, he rode his mount along in the early stages and UNTOLD RICHES was able to take up a forward position. He said whilst the race was run at a good tempo, RESOLUTE and HAPPY TANGO, which were racing to the inside and outside of UNTOLD RICHES respectively in the middle stages, were able to finish off their races, however, UNTOLD RICHES came under pressure passing the 400 Metres and then was inclined to lay in behind RESOLUTE. He said UNTOLD RICHES then commenced to give ground and when RESOLUTE was no longer racing to the inside of his mount, UNTOLD RICHES lay in badly. He added UNTOLD RICHES, when continuing to hang in, gave ground noticeably over the latter stages. He said whilst UNTOLD RICHES felt comfortable in its action and that the horse’s condition gave out shortly after entering the Straight, having had so long between races, he felt that the horse was disappointing in the fact that it gave ground at the entrance to the Straight. He said after the race he could not detect any abnormalities with the horse and it appeared sound. A veterinary inspection of UNTOLD RICHES immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of UNTOLD RICHES, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, UNTOLD RICHES will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of HARD PROMISE immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of HEY PAL immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, HEY PAL will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
UNTOLD RICHES, RESOLUTE and HAPPY TANGO were sent for sampling.

He said after the 600 Metres, when racing on the rail, he was unable to shift out to commence improving his position to take closer order as he was a considerable distance from the leader at this stage. General

1. 17 February 2021 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 8 (439)

After reviewing the videos, the Stewards believed that it was appropriate to question A Badel regarding his riding of HERCULES, particularly in the middle stages. A Badel stated that he had not been under any specific instructions on how HERCULES should be ridden other than to have the horse racing where it was comfortable to ensure that it was able to finish off the race well. He said, from barrier 8, he shifted HERCULES across behind runners in the early stages and making the turn after the 1000 Metres was racing behind JAZZ STEED. He said approaching the 900 Metres ALCARI, which was to his inside, shifted out away from the rail which resulted in HERCULES racing in a three wide position. He said at this stage YOUNG PASSION was looking to shift in from outside HERCULES to a position in front of his mount and behind JAZZ STEED. He said at this stage YOUNG PASSION had established a margin over HERCULES and he believed he would have had to ride his mount along for HERCULES to remain racing behind JAZZ STEED and to prevent YOUNG PASSION from shifting in. He said as he was reluctant to ride his mount along after the 900 Metres, he made the decision to allow YOUNG PASSION to shift in. He added after the 600 Metres he was following ALCARI which he considered to be a horse that might be able to take him into the race, however, he felt that there would be more opportunity for HERCULES to obtain clear running if brought to the outside of runners and therefore he directed his mount to the outside of YOUNG PASSION after the 400 Metres and into clear running. He said he immediately commenced to ride HERCULES along and the horse responded very well and therefore he did not believe that it was necessary in the early part of the Straight to use the whip on the horse given that HERCULES had quickened strongly at this stage. He said he continued to ride HERCULES out throughout the Straight and the horse finished off the race strongly. A Badel was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, he must ensure that, wherever possible, he maintains advantageous positions and rides his mounts competitively so that they do not get out of their ground unnecessarily.

2. Additional Veterinary Reports from Happy Valley Racemeeting on 17 February 2021

Subsequent official veterinary inspections (without endoscopy) of WINS ALL, A LA KING, JUST NOT LISTENING, RED BRICK FIGHTER, VICTORY IN HAND, JOY AVENUE, AFTER ME, PEAK TO PEAK, MERCURIAL, PLIKCLONE, SAVAQUIN, FARSHAD, CHARITY FUN, XIANG BAI QI, MALDIVES, VILLA FIONN, FAST PACE, SCORES OF FUN, SHOUSON, IGNITING and WIND N GRASS revealed no apparent abnormality.
