HK DRAGON was then left racing wide and without cover near the 900 Metres when SUPER KINGDOM improved its position to be racing inside that horse. HK DRAGON then raced greenly and shifted ground on a number of occasions before making the turn near the 850 Metres awkwardly.
The performance of CHIU CHOW WARRIOR, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CHIU CHOW WARRIOR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of CHIU CHOW WARRIOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, J Moreira was not able to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of SMART IDEA. He said the horse travelled well in the lead in the early and middle stages, but after coming under pressure passing the 400 Metres then did not finish off the race as anticipated. A veterinary inspection of SMART IDEA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of COMPULSORY immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
TORONADO PHANTOM and TURBO POWER were sent for sampling.

M Chadwick (BLAZING PARTNERS) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 350 Metres he failed to make sufficient endeavour to prevent his mount from shifting out which resulted in DESTIN being taken out across the rightful running of RED ZOFFANY which as a result was checked. SHANGHAI GRACE, which was following RED ZOFFANY, was steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence and shifted to the inside of RED ZOFFANY which then commenced to give ground. M Chadwick was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Thursday, 1 July 2021 and to expire on Thursday, 8 July 2021 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). In addition, Jockey Chadwick was fined $45,000.
Approaching the 300 Metres, SURE WIN WIN was shifted out away from the heels of ALLOY KING to obtain clear running.

He said after shifting to the outside of ALLOY KING in the early part of the Straight, he rode his mount along, however, VICTORIOUS LEADER did not respond to his riding and after shifting ground near the 300 Metres then commenced to give ground and weakened out of the race noticeably over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of VICTORIOUS LEADER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Approaching the 900 Metres, MUDITA raced tight inside the heels of REGENT GLORY which was shifted to the inside of COURAGEOUS KNIGHT to obtain cover.

Passing the 800 Metres, COURIER WONDER got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed behind COMPUTER PATCH. DUKE WAI, which was following COURIER WONDER and continuing to travel keenly, was inconvenienced in consequence.
Near the 250 Metres, SKY FIELD and DUKE WAI bumped.
Near the 100 Metres, SKY FIELD was awkwardly placed behind COURIER WONDER which shifted out.
COURIER WONDER and STRONGER were sent for sampling.

BULLISH GLORY shifted out at the start and bumped VICTORIOUS SEEKER.
DONC JE SUIS was slow to begin.
SHANGHAI DRAGON began awkwardly and shifted out, resulting in JOYFUL HEART being crowded for room inside CHEEKY PRAWN which became unbalanced, shifted out and bumped EVER LAUGH which also became unbalanced.
MCMUNIGAL began awkwardly and then shortly after the start was bumped by PLAY WISE which shifted out. Despite being ridden along, MCMUNIGAL then failed to muster speed and approaching the winning post on the first occasion was shifted across behind runners in an attempt to obtain cover, however, for the majority of the race travelled wide and without cover.
BULLISH GLORY lost its left front plate shortly after the start.
From the outside barrier, EZRA was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After being ridden along in the early stages from a wide barrier, NUREMBERG was slow to muster speed and approaching the winning post on the first occasion was steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Near the 1900 Metres, ZHAN JIANG ROCKS was awkwardly placed inside the heels of BULLISH GLORY.
Approaching and passing the 1200 Metres, DAILY CHARM and CHEEKY PRAWN raced tight.
SHANGHAI DRAGON lost its left front plate in the middle stages.
Passing the 1000 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PLAY WISE (M F Poon). After the race, M F Poon stated that inside the 1000 Metres PLAY WISE became unbalanced in its action which indicated to him that the horse may have been galloped on. A veterinary inspection of PLAY WISE immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a laceration above the back of the left hock.
Approaching the 800 Metres, PLAY WISE raced close to the heels of DAILY CHARM.
Rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, CHEEKY PRAWN and EVER LAUGH raced tight as CHEEKY PRAWN attempted to shift out from behind SHANGHAI DRAGON.
PLAY WISE was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight.
CLEMENT LEGEND also had some difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 400 Metres.
Passing the 200 Metres, MCMUNIGAL momentarily raced tight inside DONC JE SUIS.
When questioned regarding the performance of JOYFUL HEART, Z Purton attributed a large part of the horse’s disappointing performance to being hampered on jumping. He said when bumped by SHANGHAI DRAGON on jumping, JOYFUL HEART travelled keenly in the early and middle stages and would not relax. He said JOYFUL HEART may have choked down in today’s race as after enjoying an economical run on the rail, the horse was then not able to pick up when placed under pressure at the entrance to the Straight. He said a run to the inside of SHANGHAI DRAGON presented itself approaching the 300 Metres, however, JOYFUL HEART was not travelling strongly enough to improve into the run and after being momentarily awkwardly placed behind SHANGHAI DRAGON as that horse gave ground after the 300 Metres, JOYFUL HEART weakened noticeably over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of JOYFUL HEART immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of JOYFUL HEART, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, JOYFUL HEART will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SHANGHAI DRAGON, K Teetan stated that the horse, which was attempting the 2000 Metres for the first time, was inclined to lay out after passing the winning post on the first occasion and attempted to pull up after the 1700 Metres. He said it was not until EVER LAUGH improved its position to the outside of SHANGHAI DRAGON passing the 1600 Metres that the horse commenced to travel more genuinely. He said approaching the 1400 Metres he had to ride his mount along as SHANGHAI DRAGON again was reluctant to hold its position. He added SHANGHAI DRAGON did not travel strongly at any stage of the race and he was concerned as far out as the 1200 Metres that the horse was not going to finish off its race. He said SHANGHAI DRAGON came under heavy pressure after the 500 Metres and after being inclined to lay out in the early part of the Straight weakened noticeably over the concluding stages. He said following today’s race he advised connections to consider dropping the horse back in distance as he felt that SHANGHAI DRAGON would be better suited in races less than the 2000 Metres of today’s race and which would also reduce the impact of having to go around the Stable Bend after the winning post on the first occasion. A veterinary inspection of SHANGHAI DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SHANGHAI DRAGON, a winner of its two most recent starts, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHANGHAI DRAGON will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CHEEKY PRAWN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
JOYFUL HEART, DONC JE SUIS and NUREMBERG were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (694) BLAZING SPEED HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1600 m

NEW FUTURE, which kicked a rail whilst parading behind the barriers, was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race.
COPARTNER ERA was slow to begin.
SUPER FAST began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped RUN RUN GOOD.
BRAVE KING began only fairly.
From wide barriers, LEADING FORTUNE and NEW FUTURE were shifted across behind runners in the early stages to obtain cover.
Passing the 1400 Metres, SUPER FAST got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed behind RED IMPACT.
SUPER ELEGANCE travelled keenly approaching and passing the 1300 Metres.
Approaching the 1100 Metres, FIGURES TWO was awkwardly placed outside the heels of BRAVE KING when being steadied to obtain cover behind that horse.
Making the turn near the 850 Metres, CHARGE ON shifted in and bumped SUPER ELEGANCE.
For some distance after the 300 Metres, COPARTNER ERA had difficulty obtaining clear running and then near the 100 Metres raced in restricted room between RED IMPACT and SUPER FAST.
Passing the 200 Metres, RED IMPACT was held up for clear running behind FREE FOAL.
When questioned, K C Leung stated that he was asked to obtain a position in about midfield on CHARGE ON with cover if possible from a wide barrier. He said it was felt that today’s race would not be run at a strong tempo and therefore were the horse to be ridden from back in the field, CHARGE ON may be left with too much to do. He said he was also told that CHARGE ON had not finished off its race when ridden in a forward position at Happy Valley on 10 March 2021 and therefore he was asked not to use the horse up in the early stages to obtain a forward position. He said after shifting across with runners in the early stages, CHARGE ON was left racing very wide and without cover in the early and middle stages. He said he did give consideration to allowing the horse to improve its position approaching and passing the 1000 Metres in an endeavour to save ground, however, he was mindful of the specific instruction not to make use of his horse to obtain a forward position. He added as such although the race was being run at a sedate tempo, he felt that it was in CHARGE ON’s best interests to have the horse remain balanced and travelling well even though it was still required to race very wide throughout. Mr D J Hall, the trainer of CHARGE ON, confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Leung. He said from a wide barrier and due to the anticipated slow pace of the race, he was aware that CHARGE ON may not be able to obtain a position with cover, however, he was of the view that being taken back in the field would not allow the horse the best opportunity to finish off the race strongly whilst he was disappointed with CHARGE ON’S previous finishing effort when ridden to obtain a forward position. He added given the circumstances of the race, he was satisfied with Jockey Leung’s decision to remain racing wide and without cover rather than press on to obtain a forward position closer to the rail.
A veterinary inspection of SUPER ELEGANCE, LEADING FORTUNE and COPARTNER ERA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DANDY YEARS, FREE FOAL and CHARGE ON were sent for sampling.

Race:7 (695) VENGEANCE OF RAIN HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 3 1400 m

FLYING VICTORY began awkwardly and from a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
WIN WIN began only fairly and then was hampered by UNCLE STEVE which shifted out.
From the outside barriers, THE HULK and TRUST ME were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
At the entrance to the Straight, FLYING VICTORY was directed out away from the heels of THE HULK.
When questioned, Z Purton stated that it was hoped that UNCLE STEVE would be able to take a trailing position behind KING OPIE in the early stages as it was anticipated that that horse would be ridden to obtain a forward position. He said for some distance after the start UNCLE STEVE was left racing wide outside LEAP OF FAITH when that horse was ridden along to maintain its position to the inside of UNCLE STEVE. He said as it was not available for UNCLE STEVE to obtain a position with cover, he allowed the horse to improve after the 1200 Metres into the lead. He said he was comfortable to allow UNCLE STEVE to take up a leading position as the horse had performed well at its most recent start when being ridden forward to race outside the lead. He added after obtaining the lead passing the 1100 Metres, UNCLE STEVE travelled very well in the middle stages and he anticipated that the horse would finish off the race well. He said after being placed under pressure in the early part of the Straight, UNCLE STEVE lengthened well, however, the horse peaked on its run approaching the 200 Metres and then was disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground noticeably over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of UNCLE STEVE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of UNCLE STEVE, a favoured runner in today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, UNCLE STEVE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CRAIG’S STAR, M F Poon stated that after being able to obtain a forward position in the early stages, CRAIG’S STAR travelled very well in the early and middle stages. He said CRAIG’S STAR was travelling well on the Home Turn and he anticipated that the horse would be able to finish off the race well, however, after being shifted to the outside of GOLDEN LINK to obtain clear running at the entrance to the Straight, CRAIG’S STAR immediately came under heavy pressure and did not quicken as it did at its most recent start. He added he continued to ride CRAIG’S STAR out in the early part of the Straight, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and then gave ground and failed to finish off the race. He said the only explanation he could offer for the horse’s disappointing performance was that it may not have backed up from its last start when it finished off the race strongly. He said he had ridden CRAIG’S STAR in a piece of work in the lead up to today’s race and the horse had performed well in that work and did not give him an indication that it would not run well today. A veterinary inspection of CRAIG’S STAR immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of CRAIG’S STAR, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CRAIG’S STAR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of KING OPIE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CRAIG’S STAR, THE HULK and LEAP OF FAITH were sent for sampling.
<24/5/2021 Additional Veterinary Reports>KING OPIE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. KING OPIE was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer F C Lor this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, KING OPIE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Passing the 500 Metres, GLORIOUS DRAGON was awkwardly placed behind EXULTANT.
COLUMBUS COUNTY lost its right front plate approaching the 300 Metres.
The performance of TIME WARP, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, TIME WARP will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of TIME WARP immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, A Badel reported that RUSSIAN EMPEROR did not feel comfortable in its action over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of RUSSIAN EMPEROR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was noted to have a restricted action in both front legs. Before being allowed to race again, RUSSIAN EMPEROR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GLORIOUS DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EXULTANT, PANFIELD and COLUMBUS COUNTY were sent for sampling.
<24/5/2021 Additional Veterinary Reports>GLORIOUS DRAGON, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. GLORIOUS DRAGON was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer K W Lui this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, GLORIOUS DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race:9 (697) INDIGENOUS HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1400 m

XIANG YIN was crowded for room on jumping between ELON and YO BEAUTY (J Moreira) which shifted out. After the race, J Moreira reported that his saddle slipped back on jumping, placing him at a disadvantage during the race.
From the outside barriers, GREAT TREASURE and WINNING FOR ALL were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1200 Metres, ROYAL BOMB momentarily raced tight inside COMPASSION SPIRIT which got its head on the side and shifted in away from KAI XIN DRAGON after initially being taken in by that horse.
After the race, K C Leung stated that after being directed to the outside of ELON rounding the Home Turn, COMPASSION SPIRIT did not quicken as anticipated and then after being placed under heavy pressure in the early part of the Straight commenced to give ground and failed to finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of COMPASSION SPIRIT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of WINNING FOR ALL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that HALL OF CHAMP had sustained a minor laceration to the right front coronary band.
HALL OF CHAMP and HORSESAIN BOLT were sent for sampling.

Race:10 (698) ORIENTAL EXPRESS HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1400 m

As the start was effected, TELECOM PUMA stood flat-footed and consequently lost ground. Before being allowed to race again, TELECOM PUMA will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
LOVE ME MORE shifted in abruptly on jumping, resulting in ZONE D being crowded for room and losing ground. After this, from a wide barrier, ZONE D was shifted across behind runners.
From wide barriers, GO GO SIXTEEN and FOREVER were also shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
After the 800 Metres, ZONE D was left racing wide and without cover.
Passing the 500 Metres, SUPER RED DRAGON was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DRAGON FORTUNE.
BIG TWO was held up for clear running passing the 400 Metres.
In the early part of the Straight, ZONE D got its head on the side and lay in under pressure.
After the race, K C Leung stated that he was asked to have LOVE ME MORE in about a midfield position with cover if possible from a wide barrier. He said after attempting to obtain that position in the early stages, LOVE ME MORE was left racing wide and without cover near the 1200 Metres when runners, which were better drawn than LOVE ME MORE, maintained their positions. He said rather than remain racing wide and without cover, he allowed his mount to improve forward of MASTER HERO after the 1200 Metres and was able to obtain a position behind the speed near the 800 Metres. He said this resulted in LOVE ME MORE racing further forward than had been anticipated. He added, in his opinion, LOVE ME MORE’s failure to finish off the race was attributable to the horse having to race without cover until near the 800 Metres and by being ridden in a more forward position than it was at its last start when successful. A veterinary inspection of LOVE ME MORE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Also after the race, Z Purton was not able to offer any explanation for the performance of DRAGON FORTUNE. A veterinary inspection of DRAGON FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of SUPER RED DRAGON immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER RED DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Passing the 600 Metres, TORNADO TWIST was steadied away from the heels of METRO WARRIOR. POWER KOEPP, which was following TORNADO TWIST and travelling keenly, shifted out away from the heels of that horse, resulting in SUPER WIN DRAGON being crowded for room inside NAMJONG SINGS.
Approaching the 300 Metres, SUPER WIN DRAGON momentarily raced in restricted room between NAMJONG SINGS and POWER KOEPP which shifted out.
Approaching the 200 Metres, HARMONY WIN WIN shifted in under pressure and passing the 200 Metres was directed out away from the heels of NAMJONG SINGS to continue improving.
