He added that throughout the early stages whilst he encouraged CHILLI BABA to improve its position, he was reluctant to place full pressure on his mount as at its previous race starts it had an inclination to hang out and proved difficult to ride. He said from the 900 Metres he was obliged to ride CHILLI BABA along to endeavour to make ground on the field, however, CHILLI BABA continued to lay out, raced greenly and proved difficult to place under pressure making the turn between the 900 Metres and the 500 Metres. He further stated that once entering the Home Straight when balanced, CHILLI BABA gained confidence, raced truly and consequently found the line strongly.
When questioned regarding his riding out of LEATHER VANGUARD in the Straight, B Avdulla stated that under pressure his mount was inclined to lay out. He added that near the 100 Metres he became awkwardly placed close to BEAT HOLLOW when that runner gave ground and shifted in slightly. H Bowman was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 21 May 2023 and to expire on Thursday, 25 May 2023 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). After improving to the inside of BRILLIANT PIONEER, NOBLE ACE continued to race keenly and lay out towards BRILLIANT PIONEER for a short distance thereafter.
Near the 400 Metres, D STAR endeavoured to shift to the outside of SOLAR PARTNER to secure clear running and as a result made contact with CASA LEGEND. When unable to secure clear running to the outside of SOLAR PARTNER, D STAR was then shifted to the inside of that runner near the 350 Metres to obtain clear running.
Over the concluding stages, D STAR was not able to be ridden out to the finish when racing tight between SHARPEN BRIGHT and GOLDEN SAMURAI which shifted out.
When questioned regarding GOLDEN SAMURAI racing in a more forward position and the performance of the horse, C Y Ho stated that he was under no specific instructions other than to have his mount settle where comfortable. He said in the early stages GOLDEN SAMURAI naturally obtained a forward position, stepping up to 1400 Metres and when left without cover was inclined to race keenly before his mount settled near the 700 Metres when able to obtain a position behind ARIEL He added that due to the manner GOLDEN SAMURAI raced in the early stages and the track conditions, his mount was left without a finishing effort over the concluding stages. THE IRISHMAN raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

He added after allowing KEEFY to cross his mount near the 1000 Metres, he then was positioned to the inside of TURIN REDSUN throughout the middle stages. He said from the 600 Metres BEAUTY ETERNAL found it difficult to quicken on today’s track conditions, particularly when racing tight between TURIN REDSUN and CHEERFUL DAYS and as a result lost the position behind KEEFY for a short distance thereafter. He further stated that in the Home Straight BEAUTY ETERNAL responded reasonably well to his riding albeit it was not entirely comfortable on today’s track conditions. He said after NOBLE WIN jumped only fairly, he was reluctant to push his mount in the early stages having regard to his instructions and therefore NOBLE WIN settled further back in the field than what had been anticipated. The Stewards determined the racing manners of RUNNING AHEAD were the reason for the incident occurring.

He further stated that he was reluctant to shift to the outside of RUNNING AHEAD as he was given the option of improving between runners and he felt this would afford his mount the best opportunity to finish the race off. Trainer R Gibson confirmed the instructions issued. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY TOGETHER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, M F Poon (ETERNAL BLOOM) stated that it was not his instruction to lead, but from barrier 1, after commencing well his mount led the event without being pressured to do so.
