When questioned, rider stated that the instructions were to lead the event but after jumping awkwardly his mount settled further back in the early stages. He said near the 800M when positioned to the outside of a runner he elected to allow that runner to cross him as he felt he would have had to make too much use of his mount to hold that position. He added that the decision to allow that runner to cross was also influenced by the fact that his mount had given ground in the Home Straight after being ridden to lead its first race start - Race 409.
