| Background: Jerry Chau joined The Hong Kong Jockey Club Apprentice Jockeys’ School in September 2015. He left Hong Kong in January 2019 for an overseas placement with Thoroughbred Racing South Australia, where he was indentured to leading training partnership Leon McDonald & Andrew Gluyas. His race-riding career began on 20 March, 2019, and he recorded his first win in Australia on 8 May that year. Chau returned to Hong Kong with 77 wins to his name and kicked off his Hong Kong career with a double on his first day of competitive riding in his home city, scoring aboard Relentless Me and Buddies at Sha Tin on 9 May, 2020. He completed his first full season in Hong Kong with 58 wins to break the previous record set by Matthew Chadwick for the most wins by an apprentice in a single season. Chau reached the graduation benchmark with his 70th Hong Kong win in the 2021/22 season. He achieved his 200th Hong Kong victory aboard Galactic Voyage in February 2026, and finished the 2025/26 season on a high note by winning the Tony Cruz Award for the first time with 48 wins. He was part of Team Hong Kong, which finished second in the 2026 Shergar Cup at Ascot, where he guided Tuco Salamanca to victory in the Shergar Cup Dash Handicap, securing his first win in Great Britain. |
