Race:1 (514) TSING YI HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 2200 m

WINNING PAL and ROCKALOT were slow to begin. CENTENNIAL SMILE began awkwardly, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of FABULOUS START. Passing the 2000 Metres, OCTAGONAL CANYON and ROCKALOT raced tight between HEALTHY CONTENDER and WINNING PAL. Approaching the 1800 Metres, OSCAR PRINCE was checked away from the heels of SPEED AND GOLD. Rounding the Home Turn on the first occasion, ENERGETIC BOY proved very difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions when being checked away from the heels of FABULOUS START. ROCKALOT and OCTAGONAL CANYON, which were following, were checked in consequence. Passing the 1800 Metres, WINNING PAL shifted out when steadied away from the heels of DECENT FELLOW. ROCKALOT, which was following, was checked in consequence. Near the 1600 Metres, WINNING PAL was steadied away from the heels of ENERGETIC BOY. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, FABULOUS START was steadied away from the heels of HEALTHY CONTENDER which shifted in after being allowed to stride forward when caught wide and without cover in the early stages. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, WINNING PAL shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ENERGETIC BOY. After this, WINNING PAL was allowed to stride forward into the lead. Approaching the 1100 Metres, SPEED AND GOLD got its head up, shifted out and bumped FABULOUS START. Also approaching the 1100 Metres, HEALTHY CONTENDER was checked away from the heels of WINNING PAL (D Whyte) which, after reaching the lead, steadied the tempo. D Whyte was advised to ensure that he does not excessively steady the tempo during races. Approaching the 100 Metres, OSCAR PRINCE was momentarily crowded for room inside WINNING PAL. Over the concluding stages, FABULOUS START, which had its head on the side and was inclined to lay in, was steadied away from the heels of SPEED AND GOLD which shifted out. Because of this, FABULOUS START was not ridden out to the end of the race. When questioned, Y T Cheng (OSCAR PRINCE) stated that passing the 800 Metres he was racing behind HEALTHY CONTENDER. He said near the 700 Metres the tempo of the race increased and his mount was left somewhat flat-footed. He said because of this a gap opened up between HEALTHY CONTENDER and OSCAR PRINCE approaching the 600 Metres which allowed SAMMY’S FORTUNE to shift in in advance of OSCAR PRINCE. He said at this time he was riding his mount along, but OSCAR PRINCE was not able to make up the necessary ground to prevent SAMMY’S FORTUNE from shifting in Y T Cheng was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have made a far greater effort than he did on this occasion to maintain his position on the back of HEALTHY CONTENDER. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SAMMY’S FORTUNE, O Doleuze stated that, in his opinion, the horse was not suited by having to make its run inside of horses which was necessary due to the manner in which the race was run. He said he believed that SAMMY’S FORTUNE is better suited by being able to make its run outside of horses in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of SAMMY’S FORTUNE after the race did not show any significant findings. HEALTHY CONTENDER and ENERGETIC BOY were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (515) MONG KOK HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1000 m

After being loaded, INFALLIBLE CHOICE became fractious and reared, striking its head and getting its left front leg over the front partition. INFALLIBLE CHOICE was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of INFALLIBLE CHOICE. Before being allowed to race again, INFALLIBLE CHOICE will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ENERGIZED was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, GOLD JOINT was crowded for room between NATIVE KID and WINDICATOR RETURNS, both of which shifted ground. In the early stages, STILLYOUTURNMEON raced greenly. A Suborics (THUNDER FLASH) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 800 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of WINDICATOR RETURNS, resulting in that horse being taken in onto GOLD JOINT, causing both horses to lose the running to which they were rightfully entitled and being checked. A Suborics was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 6 May 2010 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 25 April 2010. In this incident, PAPAS, which was following GOLD JOINT, was hampered in consequence and ENGINEERING WONDER, which was also following, got its head up and proved difficult to settle. Near the 600 Metres, NATIVE KID, which was reluctant to maintain its position inside WINDICATOR RETURNS, was checked when momentarily crowded for room inside that horse which lay in when being steadied away from the heels of CHEVALIER KING (D Beadman) which shifted in when not clear. D Beadman was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future. Passing the 600 Metres, GOLD JOINT was steadied away from the heels of WIN PET. Near the 50 Metres, NATIVE KID, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied away from the heels of WIN PET (Apprentice M L Yeung) which got its head on the side and shifted out abruptly. Apprentice Yeung was advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course in future. Apprentice K W Leung (GOLD JOINT) reported that making the first turn near the 600 Metres the tree of his saddle broke. This was confirmed by inspection of the gear after the race. When questioned, B Prebble stated that prior to the 100 Metres he became concerned with the action of NATIVE KID as the horse had changed stride throughout the race and, in his opinion, did not fully stretch out at any stage. He said prior to WIN PET shifting out near the 50 Metres, he had commenced to ease down NATIVE KID and due to the concerns he harboured with NATIVE KID, he did not ride the horse out to the end of the race as he normally would. A veterinary inspection of NATIVE KID after the race did not show any significant findings. Having in mind the evidence of B Prebble, the Stewards ruled that prior to being permitted to race again, NATIVE KID will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHEVALIER KING and WIN PET were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (516) SOUTHORN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1200 m

EPEE DE HUA and DASHING CHAMPION were checked when crowded for room at the start between WINNING AHEAD which shifted out after leaning against the outside of its barrier stall and SUPREME COMMANDER which shifted in abruptly at the start. In this incident, SUPREME COMMANDER and DASHING CHAMPION made heavy contact, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Passing the 700 Metres, DASHING CHAMPION, which for some distance had been awkwardly placed close to the heels of FORTUNE KING, struck the heels of that horse and blundered. WINNING STRATEGY, which was following, was checked away from the heels of DASHING CHAMPION in consequence and EPEE DE HUA, which was following WINNING STRATEGY, was hampered in consequence. After this, DASHING CHAMPION and BERNINI bumped on a number of occasions. Then near the 500 Metres, BERNINI was checked when crowded for room between MUTUAL GAIN which shifted in when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPREME COMMANDER and DASHING CHAMPION which got its head on the side and shifted out away from the heels of FORTUNE KING. MIGHTY WINNER, which was following BERNINI, was steadied away from that horse in consequence and EPEE DE HUA, which was following MIGHTY WINNER, shifted out abruptly when being steadied away from the heels of that horse. Throughout the race, MUTUAL GAIN travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of BERNINI and MIGHTY WINNER after the race did not show any significant findings. WINNING AHEAD and WINNING STRATEGY were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (517) SIU SAI WAN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

At the start, RAISING SUN and CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE were crowded for room between SPEEDY and DARPANA which shifted out. From a wide barrier, PERFECT TEN was taken across behind runners to a position on the fence shortly after the start. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE was checked when crowded for room between ROYAL PORTRAIT (H W Lai) which, after initially being taken in by BEAUTIFUL CHOICE (O Doleuze), then shifted in away from that horse. Both H W Lai and O Doleuze were advised to ensure that they make every effort to give their fellow riders sufficient racing room in future. Passing the 1300 Metres, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE shifted out and bumped ROYAL PORTRAIT when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DARPANA. Passing the 1000 Metres, PERFECT TEN was steadied away from the heels of CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE. Approaching the 800 Metres, BEAUTIFUL CHOICE proved very difficult to settle and shifted out away from the heels of SPEEDY after being checked away from the heels of that horse. Near the 600 Metres, DARPANA was checked after attempting to improve between RAISING SUN and SPEEDY where there was insufficient room. Rounding the Home Turn, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE was checked severely away from the heels of SHINING SPUR which, when giving ground, raced tight between MAGIC TURBO and SPEEDY which at this time was taken out slightly by RAISING SUN which shifted away from the fence to improve. Throughout the race, MAGIC TURBO travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding of ROCKET AND GOLD rounding the Home Turn and in the Straight, Y T Cheng stated that after following the eventual winner, LEO’S PRIDE, he elected to shift to the outside of that horse to improve his position passing the 500 Metres. He said as he did this, he observed CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE, which was racing in advance of ROCKET AND GOLD, being severely checked, therefore he hesitated in his riding of ROCKET AND GOLD in order to establish whether it would be better to shift to either the inside or the outside of that horse when it gave ground. He said as CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE shifted out when being checked, he elected to shift to the inside of that horse and on straightening immediately recommenced riding ROCKET AND GOLD. He said passing the 200 Metres when making ground, ROCKET AND GOLD raced tight inside CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE which shifted in and because of this he was hampered in his endeavour to ride the horse out at this stage. Y T Cheng was advised that his explanation would be recorded, however, in the opinion of the Stewards, his riding rounding the Home Turn lacked decisiveness and that in future he would be expected to be more assertive in similar circumstances. veterinary inspection of BEAUTIFUL CHOICE after the race did not show any significant findings. LEO’S PRIDE and WIN A DOZEN were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (518) SHUM SHUI PO HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

BRILLIANT ONE was withdrawn prior to Race 1 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (capped elbow right fore). Before being allowed to race again, BRILLIANT ONE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GLORIOUS GIANT shifted in at the start and bumped SOHNA. From the outside barrier, VALUE CHOICE was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. When being steadied to obtain a position behind runners closer to the fence, PLANET got its head up for some distance shortly after the start. Near the 1150 Metres, GLORIOUS GIANT was momentarily crowded for room between POWER AND GOLD and SOHNA, both of which shifted ground. Near the 550 Metres, POWER AND GOLD (Y T Cheng) was checked and became unbalanced when momentarily crowded for room inside GLORIOUS GIANT which shifted in slightly. In this incident, Y T Cheng’s right foot made contact with the running rail. Near the 450 Metres, SOHNA shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GLORIOUS GIANT and in doing so made heavy contact with ESPERANZA, resulting in both horses becoming badly unbalanced. As the Stewards were of the view there was no rider error involved in this incident, no further action was taken. Shortly after entering the Straight, SOLAR UP and TOP DRAGON bumped due to both horses shifting ground. TOP DRAGON then shifted out, resulting in NOT QUITE PERFECT having to be steadied away from that horse and in turn shifted out, resulting in GLORIOUS GIANT being inconvenienced. Near the 250 Metres, POWER AND GOLD, which had been held up for clear running, was shifted out in an endeavour to obtain a run to the outside of TOP DRAGON. As POWER AND GOLD was not clear to shift out at this time, the horse was checked by its rider and shifted in. A short distance later, POWER AND GOLD was again checked when disappointed for running between SOLAR UP and TOP DRAGON which shifted in slightly. POWER AND GOLD was then not able to obtain clear running until near the 100 Metres. When questioned regarding the improved performance of TOP DRAGON, Trainer Y S Tsui stated that at its first run in Hong Kong over 1400 Metres, the horse had raced creditably to be beaten just in excess of 7 lengths. He said at its next start when stepping up to 1600 Metres, TOP DRAGON, although meeting interference near the 900 Metres, was, in his opinion, disappointing and for this reason he elected to drop the horse back in distance. He said TOP DRAGON, which was racing at Happy Valley for the first time tonight, was more settled in the Parade Ring than it had been at its previous starts at Sha Tin. He said TOP DRAGON’s track work had improved since its last run, therefore he had expected some improvement in the horse’s performance tonight, however, its win had not been anticipated. Mr Tsui was advised that now that TOP DRAGON had found form, the horse would be expected to race consistently wherever possible in future. A veterinary inspection of NOT QUITE PERFECT after the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of SOLAR UP after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea. TOP DRAGON and RUGBY HEAVEN were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (519) SO KON PO HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 (Special Condition) 1200 m

Shortly after the start, ELEGANCE FORTUNE and PACKING POWER were crowded for room between ROYAL DOCTOR and POT OF GOLD, both of which shifted ground. Approaching the 800 Metres, SOLDIER, which improved to be racing to the inside of ELEGANCE FORTUNE, was steadied when crowded for room inside that horse which itself was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GLENEALY STAR which shifted in when barely clear. Rounding the turn near the 600 Metres, SOLDIER shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of VICTORY STYLE when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ELEGANCE FORTUNE. VICTORY STYLE then became unbalanced and shifted out, resulting in SOLDIER being crowded for room inside ROYAL DOCTOR which itself became unbalanced when bumped by SOLDIER. Apprentice M L Yeung (BROTHERS IN ARMS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that rounding the Home Turn he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of TOP NEWS, resulting in that horse being severely checked and losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled. VICTORY STYLE, ELEGANCE FORTUNE, ROYAL DOCTOR, SOLDIER and SUPER GOAL MASTER were all hampered in consequence. Apprentice Yeung was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 29 April 2010 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting this Saturday, 10 April 2010. Near the 100 Metres, SOLDIER was steadied away from the heels of BROTHERS IN ARMS and shifted out. Over the concluding stages, ELEGANCE FORTUNE, which was hanging in, raced in restricted room between GLENEALY STAR and ROYAL DOCTOR which shifted in away from the heels of PACKING POWER which also got its head on the side and shifted in. Because of this, ELEGANCE FORTUNE was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. When questioned, M Chadwick (POT OF GOLD) stated that he had been instructed if POT OF GOLD was able to go forward without being made use of and was able to lead, he should allow the horse to do so, however, if horses to his inside were ridden along to go forward, he should attempt to obtain a position with cover. He said POT OF GOLD began only fairly, he immediately observed GILDED FLIGHT to his inside being vigorously ridden to obtain a forward position, he formed the view that he would have had to make too much use of POT OF GOLD to take up a forward position, therefore he elected to obtain a position with cover behind runners. He said making the first turn when wide on the track, runners to his inside improved their positions which resulted in POT OF GOLD racing wide and further back in the field than had been anticipated. A veterinary inspection of SOLDIER after the race did not show any significant findings. PACKING POWER and WEI HAI INVINCIBLE were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that WEI HAI INVINCIBLE was lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, WEI HAI INVINCIBLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race:7 (520) THE HONG KONG FOOTBALL CLUB CENTENARY CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m

PAR EXCELLENCE was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, GO FAY FAY and COUNTRY MAGIC were checked when crowded for room between JUST CHILL and DESTINY’S CHILD (W M Lai) which shifted out. W M Lai was reprimanded and advised to make every effort to keep his mounts straight in future. Making the first turn passing the 1100 Metres, GO FAY FAY was steadied away from the heels of JUN HUA and in doing so shifted out, resulting in COUNTRY MAGIC and JUST CHILL being hampered. Both PAR EXCELLENCE and JUST CHILL were held up for clear running rounding the Home Turn. PAR EXCELLENCE then had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. Shortly after entering the Straight, JOYFUL JOYFUL was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DESTINY’S CHILD. Throughout the race, HIGH AIM travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of COUNTRY MAGIC after the race did not show any significant findings. TEAM WORK, MR VIGOROUS and TURF MAGIC were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (521) FA HUI HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1650 m

From a barrier towards the outside, ROYAL KNIGHT was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. For some distance after the start, BEST MILITARY raced in restricted room between MASTER DRAGON which shifted out and SUNRISE which was taken in slightly by YOUNG HERO. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, HEADSIWIN got its head up and was steadied away from the heels of BEST MILITARY. HEADSIWIN then proved difficult to settle for some distance after this. Passing the 900 Metes, BEST MILITARY shifted out and then was allowed to stride forward. After this, BEST MILITARY raced three wide and without cover. SUNRISE travelled wide and without cover until near the 600 Metres. For some distance after entering the Straight, MOON CHASER was checked away from the heels of YOUNG HERO. Then near the 200 Metres, MOON CHASER was disappointed for running between SUNRISE and BEST MILITARY which shifted out after being bumped by MASTER GUNNER which raced tight between BEST MILITARY and GOOD LUCK WIN which shifted out before being corrected by its rider. Near the 250 Metres, ROYAL KNIGHT was shifted out after being disappointed for running inside SUPERNOVA which shifted in. D Whyte (MOON CHASER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 150 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of YOUNG HERO, resulting in that horse being taken in across the rightful running of MASTER DRAGON, causing that horse to be checked. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday, 9 May 2010 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). This suspension shall commence on Sunday, 2 May 2010 on which day D Whyte was due to resume race riding from a suspension incurred at the Sha Tin racemeeting last Sunday. In addition, D Whyte was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating 1 further raceday. MOON CHASER, MASTER GUNNER and SUPERNOVA were sent for sampling.

1. Adjourned Inquiry

The Stewards tonight concluded the inquiry into an incident involving C K Tong (PLANET) and A Suborics (DANE PATROL) after batch 6 of the official barrier trials conducted at Sha Tin Racecourse on Tuesday, 30 March 2010. Also interviewed tonight were W M Lai (VIVA FIGHTER) and H W Lai (RIVER CAPTAIN). It was further established that the verbal altercation between the two riders continued in the sand yard. The Stewards were satisfied that the matter had been instigated by A Suborics, however, they formed the view that the contact between the two horses in the tunnel was minor and that it was unintentional. A Suborics was advised that at all times he must conduct himself professionally and that such incidents did not reflect well upon himself.
