Race:1 (507) SEVERN PLATE (Sec1) Griffin Race 1000 m

BECAUSE OF YOU’s entrance to the track was delayed due to that horse requiring replating after casting its left hind plate after leaving the Parade Ring. On arrival at the Start, BECAUSE OF YOU was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race.
The start was delayed when FANTASY JEWELLERY proved very difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, FANTASY JEWELLERY will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.
After being loaded, GOLDEN DEER became fractious. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN DEER will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
GOLDEN DEER and FANTASY JEWELLERY bumped at the start.
Passing the 800 Metres, KYNAM raced tight outside YOU READ MY MIND. Then near the 500 Metres, KYNAM became unbalanced when briefly crowded for room outside YOU READ MY MIND.
After the 400 Metres, GOLDEN DEER got its head on the side and lay out under pressure, requiring its rider, T H So, to stop riding and straighten the horse on a number of occasions.
When questioned regarding the performance of YOU READ MY MIND, B Prebble stated that his mount began very well and travelled strongly in the early stages. He said after the 500 Metres YOU READ MY MIND, whilst still travelling on the bridle, commenced to get its head on the side and was inclined to lay in. He said then near the 400 Metres KYNAM commenced to improve its position to his outside and he was obliged to ride YOU READ MY MIND along. He added as soon as he did this YOU READ MY MIND again got its head on the side and proved very difficult to ride. He said whilst he was not able to detect any soreness with YOU READ MY MIND, the horse’s action did not feel as it did when he rode it in a recent barrier trial. A veterinary inspection of YOU READ MY MIND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of ONE MORE KNIGHT immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea.
YOU READ MY MIND, KYNAM and BECAUSE OF YOU were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (508) PLANTATION HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1400 m

GORGEOUS LIFE began only fairly.
GOLD TARTINI began awkwardly.
As DOUBLE MOON was being steadied in an attempt to obtain a position with cover behind SPECTACULAR AWARD near the 1100 Metres, DOUBLE MOON was hampered and taken wider by SPECTACULAR AWARD which shifted out when proving difficult to settle. When DOUBLE MOON was taken out, IDYLLIC WIND was able to improve its position to the inside of that horse.
Passing the 850 Metres, IDYLLIC WIND was checked after improving into tight running inside SPECTACULAR AWARD which, after shifting out slightly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of LOTUS LOVE, then shifted in to resume its position. As there was no rider error involved in this incident, no further action was taken.
Passing the 600 Metres, GORGEOUS LIFE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of OCEAN BRIGHT.
ALP’S GLORY was unable to obtain clear running until passing the 300 Metres.
When racing tight between LOTUS LOVE and BEAUTIFUL SCENERY near the 250 Metres, SUNSHINE BOY was struck across the nose by the whip of H W Lai (LOTUS LOVE).
TELECOM TOP STAR was unable to obtain clear running until near the 150 Metres.
Throughout the race, LOTUS LOVE travelled wide and without cover. Also for the majority of the race, DOUBLE MOON travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SPECTACULAR AWARD, B Prebble stated that, from barrier 5, he had been instructed to ensure that he obtained cover behind the speed if possible. He said when runners to his inside were hard ridden in the early stages to obtain forward positions, he was left racing in a three wide position, however, even though the tempo of the race was only fair, he was reluctant to allow his mount to stride forward as he had been instructed to find cover. He said therefore he elected to allow LOTUS LOVE to cross SPECTACULAR AWARD after the 1000 Metres and although SPECTACULAR AWARD raced in a three wide position, the horse was able to race comfortably with cover. He added after the 600 Metres he had to niggle at SPECTACULAR AWARD to maintain its position and after being shifted to the outside of LOTUS LOVE rounding the Home Turn, SPECTACULAR AWARD was disappointing in that it did not quicken as he expected it would. He said he had ridden the horse in a barrier trial in the lead up to today’s race and in that barrier trial SPECTACULAR AWARD had performed well and had travelled comfortably throughout. He said SPECTACULAR AWARD was disappointing today in its failure to respond to his riding in the Straight even given that the horse was obliged to race three wide throughout. A veterinary inspection of SPECTACULAR AWARD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that SUNSHINE BOY was displaying signs of the “thumps”.
A veterinary inspection of DOUBLE MOON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SPECTACULAR AWARD, SUNSHINE BOY and LOTUS LOVE were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (509) HOMESTEAD HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1000 m

On arrival at the Start, CALL ME ACHIEVER had its right front plate refitted. CALL ME ACHIEVER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
SHARE OF GOLD began awkwardly and shortly after the start became unbalanced after being steadied away from the heels of PO CHING KING after shifting out towards the heels of that horse.
YAT DING WIN began very awkwardly, shifted in and in doing so bumped GOLDEN LEGEND.
Near the 500 Metres, GOLDEN LEGEND and WINNING ADVANTAGE were crowded for room between YAT DING WIN which shifted in and SOUTHERN CROSS which shifted out after being bumped by CALL ME ACHIEVER which shifted out slightly.
At the 400 Metres, BRAVE BROTHER got its head on the side and hung in, resulting in its rider, D Whyte, changing his whip through to his right hand.
When placed under pressure after the 400 Metres, SOUTHERN SPRINGS raced greenly.
Approaching the 200 Metres, BRAVE BROTHER again got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in SHARE OF GOLD being inconvenienced.
D Whyte (BRAVE BROTHER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 100 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting out across the rightful running of SHARE OF GOLD which as a result was checked and lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 18 April 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday, 10 April 2013. In assessing penalty, the Stewards acknowledged the racing manners of BRAVE BROTHER over the final 400 Metres which had contributed to this incident. When SHARE OF GOLD was checked, GOLDEN LEGEND, which was following, was obliged to shift in away from the heels of that horse to obtain clear running.
After improving quickly between YAT DING WIN and CHEERS VICTORIES which shifted in approaching the 50 Metres, WINNING ADVANTAGE was then taken out across the running of YAT DING WIN when CHEERS VICTORIES shifted out slightly. As a result of this, YAT DING WIN was checked when unable to maintain its position to the outside of WINNING ADVANTAGE.
BRAVE BROTHER continued to hang out over the concluding stages and in the run to the line shifted out, resulting in CHEERS VICTORIES and WINNING ADVANTAGE being hampered. Because of this, neither CHEERS VICTORIES nor WINNING ADVANTAGE were able to be fully tested over the concluding stages.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that BRAVE BROTHER and SOUTHERN CROSS had both lost their left front plates.
A veterinary inspection of SHARE OF GOLD immediately following the race revealed the horse to have bled in both nostrils and was also lame in its right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, SHARE OF GOLD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
JOY TOGETHER and BRAVE BROTHER were sent for sampling.
<8/4/2013 Additional Veterinary Report> The Clinical Veterinary Surgeon reported that SOUTHERN CROSS was found to be shin sore in both front legs on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, SOUTHERN CROSS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

In the Straight, NAUGHTY BABY got its head on the side, hung in under pressure and proved difficult to ride.
Throughout the race, MEDIC KINGDOM and KING OF THE DAY travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that after beginning awkwardly, EL GRANDE raced outside GLACIER BLUE in a three wide position. He said after the 1100 Metres he steadied EL GRANDE to shift in behind GLACIER BLUE and obtained a position closer to the rail. He said after shifting EL GRANDE in behind GLACIER BLUE after the 1000 Metres, EL GRANDE immediately came under pressure to hold its position and had to be ridden along vigorously for some distance approaching and making the first turn when awkwardly placed between KA WAI FORTUNE and NAUGHTY BABY. He said because of the manner in which EL GRANDE was travelling at this time, the horse settled further back in the field than he expected after being well positioned in the early stages. He said EL GRANDE continued to travel only fairly until approaching the Home Turn where the horse commenced to improve into the race well. He added EL GRANDE was then badly held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and after obtaining clear running passing the 300 Metres, the horse then had to be shifted to the outside of DARPANA near the 50 Metres to continue improving.
A veterinary inspection of HI MOLLY immediately following the race revealed that it was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being permitted to race again, HI MOLLY will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GLACIER BLUE, HYPERSONIC and DARPANA were sent for sampling.

SUPER STRIKE, which was following, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPERKING DRAGON and consequently was not able to be properly tested over the concluding stages.

He added after the 1000 Metres FULL VALUE was then left racing without cover. He said notwithstanding that FULL VALUE raced wider than had been hoped, the horse came under pressure at the 600 Metres and did not quicken at any stage thereafter. He said after being placed under pressure prior to straightening, FULL VALUE was particularly disappointing in the manner in which it weakened in the Straight. He added after the race he advised the connections that, in his opinion, FULL VALUE raced like a “tired” horse. Mr R Gibson, the trainer of FULL VALUE, stated that he had ridden the horse in some of its work leading up to today’s race and, in his opinion, that work was good. He said although the circumstances of the race did not benefit FULL VALUE today, nonetheless the horse, in his opinion, was very disappointing. He added that FULL VALUE had already raced on ten occasions this season and he would monitor the progress of FULL VALUE in the days subsequent to the race before deciding on the horse’s immediate racing campaign.
