Racing Incident Report

Turning into the Straight the first time, FAT CHOY TOGETHER was inconvenienced when being forced out by ALY BABA. Turning out of the Straight the first time, SKY HAWK became unbalanced when crowded between ALY BABA and GUSCOTT. Just after the 600 Metres, SKY HAWK was steadied when disappointed for running inside THE RICH MAN which was weakening. Approaching the 400 Metres, SKY HAWK was severely checked when disappointed for running between THE RICH MAN which was continuing to give ground and EMPHASIS. When questioned, Apprentice S K Sit (ALY BABA) said he had been instructed from a good gate to try and find a position just behind THE RICH MAN which was expected to lead. He was however given an option to go forward and lead if there was no pace on in the race. Apprentice Sit said ALY BABA left the gates well, in the early stages he had trouble with his racing glasses and shortly after the start he bumped them with his whip and they fell off. He said there was an opportunity near the 2000 Metres for him to shift onto the rail and take up a position somewhere towards the front behind THE RICH MAN, but he elected not to do so, then at about 1800 Metres shifted out, in doing so inconvenienced FAT CHOY TOGETHER and made contact with that horse several times and was obliged to race considerably wider for some distance. He said after this he went on to a position towards the front and raced near THE RICH MAN, then along the back rode ALY BABA to lead as he is of the view that the horse is not a sit and sprint type and needs clear running to show its best, then over the concluding stages ALY BABA weakened. Mr L Ho, Trainer of ALY BABA, confirmed that he had instructed Apprentice Sit to travel somewhere behind THE RICH MAN if possible, but he also said he did tell the Apprentice if there was no pace he was to lead. The Stewards did not proceed with the matter tonight, however, Apprentice Sit was told his riding at certain stages had caused a lot of concern and in their opinion reflected little credit upon him as a race rider. He was told a repetition of such riding cannot be condoned. The explanations submitted by Mr Ho were accepted. MERRY STAR was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
