Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the barriers, E Legrix (VICTORY MOUNT) reported to the Veterinary Surgeon that the horse was not striding out in its preliminary. VICTORY MOUNT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was lame in its off side front leg. On this advice, VICTORY MOUNT was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. About the 1200 Metres, ORLANDO FLYER, which was proving very difficult to settle, got its head up and became unbalanced when close to the heels of AMIABLE. As a consequence, CHIRAG, which as following, was severely checked. Some inconvenience was also caused to THE BEST WINNER. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental and no action was taken. In the Straight, FRENCH FRY hung in. F Coetzee (SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT) said he had ridden the horse at work on the grass last Thursday, this work in his opinion was quite satisfactory and it was expected SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT would be competitive in today's race. He explained from a gate towards the outside he allowed SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT to run along in the early stages in an endeavour to find a position behind the lead. He said he was unable to do this and thought in the circumstances he had no alternative but to go forward and lead and in his opinion he was able to do this quite comfortably with AMIABLE on his outside. He pointed out near the 1000 Metres CONNOISSEUR'S BET went forward to lead which gave him cover. He said however before straightening SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT started to give ground, in the early part of the Straight was well beaten and in the run to the line was very disappointing. Before being allowed to race again, SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. S King (KIWI STAR) explained in the early stages the horse was reluctant to stretch out. After the race, he reported to the Veterinary Surgeon that the horse was sore behind. The Veterinary Surgeon examined KIWI STAR, had the horse trotted up and was unable to detect any abnormalities.
