Racing Incident Report
HIGH FIVE was slowly away, was then checked as a result of KIMBER shifting in abruptly on jumping. RESOURCEFUL PRINCE was slowly away. On leaving the gates, TRUST ME shifted out and caused some inconvenience to STERLING STAR. About the 1000 Metres, STERLING STAR was checked rather severely when crowded between TRUST ME which in the opinion of the Stewards shifted out slightly and GOLD CHARM (J Egan) which again in the opinion of the Stewards momentarily shifted in. The Stewards took the view that this was a borderline case, but because of the evidence before them they believed the benefit of the doubt should be given to J Egan and accordingly no direct action was taken, however, he was told he must exercise care at all times when shifting ground and to do all he can to avoid incidents such as this occurring. After the 600 Metres and again at about the 300 Metres, THE OSCARS struck the running rail. When questioned regarding his riding of SMILING FOREST in the Straight, W Woods said because of the pace of the race he had to ride along sooner than he would have wished to keep up, then in the Straight he was of the view SMILING FOREST was inclined to be feeling the ground and also was wanting to lay in. He said just after straightening he pulled the whip but as he was of the view the horse was not stretching out as it should he put the whip down and rode SMILING FOREST out as best he could hands and heels to the line. Whilst the Stewards accepted the explanations submitted by W Woods regarding his riding in the Straight, he was told he had on this occasion come under notice and he should endeavour to ride all mounts right out in a manner which leaves no room for query. Before being allowed to race again, SMILING FOREST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. The Stewards will allow S Dye (KIMBER) an opportunity of explaining the poor performance of the horse. KIMBER and SMILING FOREST were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
