Racing Incident Report

Just as the gates opened, CITIZEN KANE reared, then came out awkwardly and as a consequence lost a lot of ground. SUN SHINE RIVER missed the start slightly, was then checked when crowded between CRYSTAL CHARM which shifted in and HELENE VITALITY which was taken out by SHAXI FORTUNE. About the 900 Metres, BEST OF THE BEST was steadied when tightened for room between LUCKY SIX which shifted out slightly and BRILLIANT WAY which shifted in slightly. About the 500 Metres, CITIZEN KANE was awkward on the hindquarters of MERIDIAN STAR, then on straightening was steadied when tightened between LUCKY SIX and MERIDIAN STAR which shifted out to go forward. J Egan (LUCKY SIX) explained about the 500 Metres the saddle shifted to the off side. When questioned regarding the riding tactics he had adopted on ORIENTAL EXPRESS, F Coetzee said before the race he had been told by the trainer that earlier in the horse's career ORIENTAL EXPRESS had led 1400 Metre races. He said today Mr I W Allan instructed him not to come back on the horse, to allow it to leave the gates cleanly, if he was to travel in front that would be acceptable, however, if he took up a position somewhere 2nd, 3rd or 4th it would be ideal. F Coetzee explained ORIENTAL EXPRESS jumped well, immediately got on the bit and whilst he acknowledged in the middle stages he might have been going a little too quickly, but to have steadied the horse would have meant taking a good hold of it and in the circumstances he was reluctant to do this and allowed ORIENTAL EXPRESS to run along in front. He said in the Straight he endeavoured to wait for as long as possible before putting ORIENTAL EXPRESS under full pressure, but at about the 200 Metres when challenged the horse was not able to quicken and just kept on pretty much one pace to the line. In the opinion of the Stewards, the explanations tendered by F Coetzee were in the circumstances satisfactory and accordingly he was told what he had put forward was accepted.
