Racing Incident Report

After declarations were taken for tonight's meeting, the Stewards became aware that G Mossé, the stable retained rider for Trainer P C Kan, had been engaged to ride METRO TRAVELLER for Trainer L Fownes when his retained rider W Woods had been engaged to ride GUSCOTT for Trainer B K Ng. The regulation says that a retained jockey may not normally be declared to ride outside his retaining stable if his retaining stable has a runner ridden by another stable's retained jockey. Permission was therefore given for Mr Fownes to substitute M Kinane as the rider of METRO TRAVELLER. Mr Fownes, trainer of METRO TRAVELLER, said when he engaged G Mossé for the ride, he was not aware W Woods had taken an outside engagement. He said before declarations for the meeting he had advised W Woods of the mounts he would require him for and METRO TRAVELLER was not one of these as he had not ridden the horse during its last 16 runs. In all the circumstances of this matter, it was decided that it was entirely inappropriate for any action to be taken. PERFECT MOMENT jumped very awkwardly, shifted in and bumped WINMARK. SOUTHERN TREASURE left the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about. From a difficult gate, CHARMING STRIDE was obliged to race wide in the early stages when going forward to take up a position outside the leader, then rounding the Home Turn hung out. Before CHARMING STRIDE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. M Kinane (METRO TRAVELLER) was fined $25,000 for failing to ride his horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. S Dye (BUENO BUENO) said he has not been riding the horse in its work, but was advised by the trainer that the horse was well going into the race. He said BUENO BUENO does have a tendency to pull, but tonight at no stage did so and was a well beaten horse before the 1000 Metres. He said the horse was not lame in its action, but despite his riding dropped right out. JUST IN TIME and BUENO BUENO were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said BUENO BUENO had a heart irregularity. Before being allowed to race again, BUENO BUENO will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
