Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, WAH YAN FORTUNE, which had been a little restless, bounded in the air, bumped the inside of its stall, came out very awkwardly and D Whyte momentarily lost the use of his off side iron. WAH YAN FORTUNE was further inconvenienced when crowded between WELL BEST and BONANZA, both of which shifted ground. Just after the start, WELL BEST, which had left the gates awkwardly, was steadied when crowded for room between HAIL WINNER and BONANZA. In the early stages, WELL BEST pulled hard and proved difficult to settle. Near the 1000 Metres, MY DELIGHT, which was pulling and proving very difficult to settle, became unbalanced and shifted a lot of ground when racing close to the heels of BONANZA which was being steadied from a position near the front. ELEPHANT DANCE, which was following MY DELIGHT, was checked as a consequence. About the 1000 Metres, WAH YAN FORTUNE shifted in slightly to avoid MY DELIGHT. As a consequence of this, some crowding was caused to THE BEST WINNER. For some distance near the 400 Metres, THE BEST WINNER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of RESOURCEFUL PRINCE and just inside the hindquarters of WELL BEST. M Cahill (I WIN) explained he had been asked to ride the horse forward from an outside gate and try and find a position. He said in accordance with the instructions he raced towards the lead, was unable to get in and was obliged in the early and middle stages to travel at least four wide. He said near the 800 Metres he made the decision because of being so wide to press forward to try and find the front. He said had he been able to get at least three wide he would have ridden the horse differently, because the situation he found himself he thought it was in the best interests of the horse to continue forward and try to get closer to the rail. He said when I WIN got to the front, it appeared to be reluctant to press on and he continued riding much harder than he would have wished to keep the horse running. He said in different circumstances he would have ridden I WIN altogether differently. WAH YAN FORTUNE was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
