Racing Incident Report

Mr T W Leung, trainer of ANIMATED PLAYTHING, was fined $2,000 for declaring E Legrix as the rider without formally confirming the engagement. E Legrix had a prior engagement to ride HIGHLIGHT. Whilst being saddled, OLIVE OR TWIST bumped its head. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. After arriving at the Start, it was noted that LIGHTMASTER had its tongue over the bit. This was corrected before the horse was boxed. CAMARADERIE left the gates awkwardly with its head up, shifted out and bumped BONANZA. Apprentice M W Leung (ANIMATED PLAYTHING) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that about the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of OLIVE OR TWIST. As a consequence of this, OLIVE OR TWIST was taken in onto RENA'S WUNDERBAR which shifted ground, causing LATIN DANCER to lose running to which it was rightfully entitled, strike heels and nearly fall. After considering all the circumstances surrounding the incident, submissions put by Mr G Lane, the allocated trainer of Apprentice M W Leung, who pointed out that the apprentice had never been suspended before, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for his licence be suspended until Sunday 26 May 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Wednesday 15 May 2002. Near the 800 Metres, ANIMATED PLAYTHING shifted out from behind MUNDAHISH. As a consequence of this, OLIVE OR TWIST was obliged to race wider and for some time was awkward when close to the heels of ANIMATED PLAYTHING. Apprentice M W Leung was told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. In the run to the winning post, ANIMATED PLAYTHING shifted out, this caused some inconvenience to OLIVE OR TWIST. LATIN DANCER was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, it was noted that MUNDAHISH had lost its near front plate.
