Racing Incident Report

ORIENTAL PEARL was withdrawn on raceday morning on veterinary grounds (lame near fore). Before being permitted to race again, ORIENTAL PEARL will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. Stewards Instruction 8 which refers to horses having suffered a bleeding attack states that on the first occasion the horse involved will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months and barred from the training track for a period of 2 months. Further to that the Track Work Regulation states that horses which have been barred from racing following a bleeding attack may only use the following Club training facilities but cannot be entered until the full ban has expired and may only be declared to run in a race after they have passed an official veterinary examination. During the first two months of the ban, horses are able to use horse walkers, lungeing ring and both trotting rings. After declarations for today's meeting, the Stewards became aware that LION ROCK, trained by Mr P F Yiu, which had suffered a bleeding attack on 14 February 2002, had used the small All Weather Track on 17 March 2002, had used the large All Weather Track on 18 March 2002. On 19, 20, 22 March 2002 the horse had used the small All Weather Track. On 23 March 2002 LION ROCK had worked 800 metres in 65 seconds. On 24 March 2002 it had again used the small All Weather Track. On 25 March 2002 it had worked 400 metres in 31.7 seconds, then had used the swimming pool on 25 March 2002, 1, 7 and 11 April 2002. All of this work is contrary to Stewards Instruction 8 and the Track Work Regulation. Mr Yiu pleaded guilty to having breached Stewards Instruction 8 in that as the trainer of LION ROCK, he allowed the horse to use training facilities which it was not eligible to do before the expiration of the 2 months period from the date which it had bled. For his breach of the Instruction, Mr Yiu was fined $30,000. The Stewards were of the view that as LION ROCK had been trained contrary to the rules, it should not be permitted to race today and accordingly was withdrawn. Mr Yiu was told the entries of LION ROCK will not be accepted until the Stewards further consider the matter. The Stewards decided that the full ban imposed on LION ROCK had expired on 13 May 2002 and accordingly the entry which was submitted on 14 May 2002 was in accordance with the rule. On jumping, TRIUMPHANT STAR was checked rather severely when crowded between PERFECT SPORT which shifted in and APPLIED SUPREME which was taken out abruptly by BOLD'N POWER. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. On leaving the gates, GREEN FINDER and CHINA WORLD bumped, and just after the start GREEN FINDER dipped. Just after the start, SPEEDY EXPRESS jumped a mark across the track. For a short distance after the 700 Metres, BOLD'N POWER was awkward between PERFECT SPORT and the hindquarters of GREEN FINDER which was being taken out slightly by SPEEDY EXPRESS. SPEEDY EXPRESS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
