Racing Incident Report

On leaving the Parade Ring, COOL SWING became upset, lost its footing behind, slipped over and was temporarily cast against the fence. Acting on veterinary advice, COOL SWING was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. When the gates opened, MUNDAHISH knuckled slightly. PLENTY OF SURPRISE jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped HAPPY ECLIPSE. About the 800 Metres, SIR TIMAH was severely checked, PAR AVION which was following was also severely checked and shifted ground, this caused inconvenience to A RUN OF LUCK. It was established that in the run up to the 800 Metres, SPEEDY CHAMPION (C Williams), which was going forward and endeavouring to get in, raced tight beside BOXING DAY. The evidence also established that at about this point, HAPPY ECLIPSE was taken out by PLENTY OF SURPRISE, which was having its first race start, made the turn near the 800 Metres awkwardly and shifted out. The check to SIR TIMAH was one of considerable significance, however, the Stewards in all the circumstances were not able to attribute responsibility to any one rider or riders and accordingly no direct action was taken. However, C Williams was told tight riding can at times lead to regrettable incidents and he should allow sufficient racing room at all times. The Stewards allowed Mr J Moore, trainer of WINNING PARADE, an opportunity of explaining the improved performance of the horse today when compared with its last run at Happy Valley on 24 April 2002. Mr Moore said before the horse's last run at Happy Valley, it had been leaving the gates rather poorly and also in his opinion had become somewhat "sour" with racing. He said since April he has given the horse a lot of gate work and was confident today WINNING PARADE would leave the stalls better. He also said whilst WINNING PARADE has done a lot of work recently, the lack of racing has seemed to have freshened the horse up. He also went on to say it was apparent to him today WINNING PARADE was very comfortable in the prevailing track conditions. Mr Moore did say both he and Jockey A Marcus did anticipate the horse would run better today, but neither thought it was at its top and accordingly the owners were advised at best WINNING PARADE had a place chance in the race. The explanations submitted by Mr Moore on this occasion were accepted. B Fayd'herbe (ASIA STAR) explained before mounting the horse he discussed riding tactics with the trainer, the trainer pointed out to him he was not going to provide him with any specific instructions as the horse's run last Wednesday should be known to Jockey Fayd'herbe. B Fayd'herbe said he explained to the trainer he intended to allow ASIA STAR to settle out at the back and try and make ground inside in the Straight. He said ASIA STAR came from the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about, he then allowed the horse time to settle at the rear, however, ASIA STAR was well beaten a long way out. BOXING DAY and ASIA STAR were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
