Racing Incident Report
COOL SWING was withdrawn on 15.10.02 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SUPER SUCCESS (D Whyte). Before COOL SWING can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. TIMBER CITY and HIGH FIVE were slowly away. In the early and middle stages, JUST MERRY pulled hard, proved somewhat difficult to settle and got its head up. H K Yim (MASCOT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that about the 1000 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of BELONG TO US. As a consequence of this, that horse was crowded onto JUST MERRY which was taken in across the running of WINNING PARADE, resulting in that horse being checked. H K Yim was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 31 October 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin next Sunday 20 October 2002. After the 800 Metres, BELONG TO US was inclined to shift out away from JUST MERRY, in doing so bumped MASCOT. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, ENGINEERING WONDER raced awkwardly and hung out. About the 500 Metres, IN THE MONEY, which was inclined to be hanging in, bumped SUPER SUCCESS. About 100 Metres out, JUST MERRY, which was weakening, was steadied as MASCOT shifted in when only just clear. In the Straight, IN THE MONEY hung in. JUST MERRY, MASCOT, LATIN DANCER and WINNING PARADE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted that JUST MERRY had sustained a laceration to its mouth. Subsequent to the race, D Dunn (HIGH FIVE) reported he was concerned with the action of the horse. HIGH FIVE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. After the race, the Veterinary Officer said IN THE MONEY was making an abnormal breathing noise. An endoscopic examination was carried out and he formed the opinion that IN THE MONEY was in the early stages of being a "roarer". Before IN THE MONEY can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 Oct 2002):
IN THE MONEY returned making a respiratory noise. On scoping a diagnosis of roaring was made. Dr Brian Stewart, Senior Veterinary Officer, said the horse had made a respiratory noise after racing about a month ago and two problems were noted after that race: a soft palate displacement and early signs of roaring. He said the soft palate problem has improved with the use of the tongue tie, but the roaring condition has progressed under pressure. Dr Stewart said Mr I W Allan, trainer of IN THE MONEY, is making arrangements for the horse to have corrective surgery.
An endoscopic examination of HIGH FIVE has revealed the horse to be a mild "roarer". The condition has been reported by Dr Stewart as stable and he said it does not require specific action at the moment. He also advised when he examined HIGH FIVE at the stables yesterday, he noted the horse is quite a stiff moving individual and does have minor arthritic problems.
