Racing Incident Report

CYBER GULCH jumped awkwardly and was further inconvenienced by ALL WIN which on leaving the gates shifted out abruptly. Turning out of the Straight the first time, TWEET struck the running rail and was severely checked. THISTLEJADE was also severely checked. It was established that running to the first turn, NEW CENTURY (Apprentice M W Leung) had initially cleared RESOURCEFUL PRINCE (D Whyte) and started to shift in. NEW CENTURY did not continue inwards and momentarily shifted out. At this time, RESOURCEFUL PRINCE improved to be racing towards the inside of NEW CENTURY and close to that horse's heels. On the point of the turn, NEW CENTURY again shifted in, this resulted in RESOURCEFUL PRINCE being momentarily crowded onto THISTLEJADE which in turn was crowded onto TWEET. The crowding was accentuated by PLATINUM EXPRESS being taken in slightly by BELLAGIO. The checks to both TWEET and THISTLEJADE were severe, but in view of all the circumstances, the Stewards decided it was inappropriate to take any direct action. However, Apprentice M W Leung was told he has a responsibility to ride with far more care than he did on this occasion. D Whyte was advised in the opinion the Stewards the manner in which he improved to be close to the heels of NEW CENTURY was not the type of riding which is expected from a leading rider. A better standard and greater concern for his fellow riders is expected from him. When THISTLEJADE checked turning out of the Straight the first time, ALL WIN, which was following, was hampered in consequence. S Dye (THISTLEJADE) explained as a result of being checked turning out of the Straight the first time, he got further back than was the intention. He went on to say in the middle stages he followed RESOURCEFUL PRINCE, but near the 700 Metres when endeavouring to follow that horse through was disappointed for running and on straightening shifted in abruptly to find running and endeavour to go forward. THISTLEJADE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, THISTLEJADE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. PLATINUM EXPRESS and RESOURCEFUL PRINCE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 Oct 2002):
THISTLEJADE was examined after racing. No significant findings were made. However, when examined yesterday, it was noted the horse had some heat in its left front fetlock joint and was showing pain on flexion. Dr Stewart said this is consistent with THISTLEJADE having "jarred up" during its run last Wednesday night. The horse has been referred to the stable Veterinary Surgeon for further investigation.
