Racing Incident Report

At the start, WINNING WAYS knuckled and as a consequence got well back. Shortly after the start, WILFUL FLIGHT was checked when crowded for room between METRO FLYER which shifted in after being bumped by SPEEDY CHAMPION and CLASSIC SYMPHONY which was taken out by HONG KONG STAR. SPEEDY CHAMPION became unbalanced and lost ground when it bumped METRO FLYER. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, WILFUL FLIGHT raced awkwardly, got its head up and shifted out across the heels of SOUND LOVER. At about the 700 Metres, SOUND LOVER was steadied when crowded for room by RIVER OF CHINA (G Schofield) which shifted in when not quite clear. G Schofield was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. At the 600 Metres, WINNING WAYS shifted out and bumped INSIGHTOREALITY. When under pressure after the 200 Metres, RIVER OF CHINA shifted out and bumped WINNING WAYS. G Schofield stopped riding and straightened. Over the concluding stages, WINNING WAYS hung in and just prior to the winning post shifted ground and bumped RIVER OF CHINA. SPEEDY CHAMPION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, SPEEDY CHAMPION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said he was unable to detect any abnormalities. WINNING WAYS, METRO FLYER and GOOD BROTHER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 28 Nov. 2002) :
SPEEDY CHAMPION was today examined by Dr Brian Stewart, the Club's Senior Veterinary Officer, at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes. He said the horse, while not lame, was found to be moving stiffly. It is a horse with multiple mildly arthritic joints.
