Racing Incident Report
While being saddled, SNOWSTORM hit its head in the saddling stalls. SNOWSTORM was observed to be bleeding from the right nostril as a result of this incident and accordingly was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. A subsequent endoscopic examination revealed the blood originated from the nasal passages and therefore the Veterinary Officer said SNOWSTORM should not be reported as having bled. NEW PLANET, KEEN WINNER and DON SEBASTIAN were slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, SILENT PARTNER was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of CELEBRATION which shifted in. After the 1200 Metres, KEEN WINNER became unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of NEW PLANET which shifted out as the pace in front steadied. In the early part of the Straight, SILENT PARTNER was held up for running behind HARMONY PARTNER and after the 300 Metres was shifted to the outside of that horse in an endeavour to improve. After the 200 Metres, SILENT PARTNER was severely checked when crowded for room between CELEBRATION which initially shifted in and HARMONY PARTNER which shifted out. While the check to SILENT PARTNER was one of some significance, the Stewards could not apportion blame to one rider, therefore no action was taken. In this incident, SILENT PARTNER was hit on the head by the whip of C Soumillon (CELEBRATION). After the 100 Metres, DANEFACTOR, which was giving ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded by TRIUMPHANT FEELING. In the run to the winning post, HARMONY PARTNER raced close to the heels of CELEBRATION and therefore was not ridden out as it normally would be. E Legrix (DON SEBASTIAN) said the horse travelled comfortably in a rearward position with cover behind UNIVERSAL CHARGER until the 1200 Metres. At this time NEW PLANET, which had been racing to his inside, shifted away from the running rail and carried him wider, causing him to lose his cover. He said at the same time it was apparent to him the pace of the race was slowing and therefore he felt it was in the best interests of DON SEBASTIAN to allow the horse to work forward gradually. He added at no stage after the 1200 Metres was he able to obtain cover and was obliged to race four wide after the 700 Metres. He said the way the race was run did not suit DON SEBASTIAN's style of racing and in the Straight when placed under pressure it failed to respond to his riding. The explanations submitted by E Legrix were accepted. UNIVERSAL CHARGER and FLYING BISHOP were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer examined HARMONY PARTNER after the race. He reported the horse had severed its left hind tendon. He believed this incident occurred as a result of being galloped on.
