Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, G Schofield (MY FORTUNE) expressed concern to the Veterinary Surgeon over the horse's action. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. The Veterinary Officer reported after the race that MY FORTUNE was lame in the right fore leg. Before being permitted to race again, MY FORTUNE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. After being boxed, LUCKY LAD became fractious, lunged forward and broke open the front gates of its stall. ADMIRAL began very awkwardly and got its head up. For some distance after the 300 Metres, CORAJOSO, which had begun to close off strongly, was unable to obtain clear running between D'OR WIN and SOLAR EMPIRE, both of which were giving ground. To obtain clear running, CORAJOSO was steadied and shifted to the outside of D'OR WIN after the 200 Metres. E Saint-Martin (ROYAL ARMY) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in front of midfield. He said when LUCKY LAD which had drawn to his outside became fractious in the barrier, ROYAL ARMY became distracted and when the gates opened was slow to begin. He said this caused him to race in a position worse than midfield, then in the middle stages ROYAL ARMY hung out. He said making the latter stages of the Home Turn, he became aware TAMAR which he was following was under pressure and he considered his best option was to improve to the inside of that horse. He said in the Straight ROYAL ARMY obtained an uninterrupted run, however, in his opinion finished the race off only fairly and raced in a manner which would now suggest the horse would be suited by distance of further than today's 1400 Metres. Mr T W Leung, trainer of ROYAL ARMY, confirmed the riding instructions issued to E Saint-Martin and said the horse's work had been the same as usual. ROYAL ARMY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, ROYAL ARMY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this revealed a significant amount of mucus in the trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ROYAL ARMY will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. D Whyte (LUCKY LAD) said he had been instructed despite its outside draw to follow ROYAL ARMY across which it was thought would go forward and race in a handy position. He said after being fractious in the barrier, LUCKY LAD "flew" the start and when this happened, he elected to ride the horse along for a short distance so as to clear runners to his inside and shift in. He said this resulted in LUCKY LAD racing further forward than was the intention. Mr J Moore, trainer of LUCKY LAD, confirmed the riding instructions issued to D Whyte. He said he had altered the riding instructions today as he considered there would be good speed in the race and the horse was carrying a heavier weight today, therefore he felt in the circumstances it would be more suitable for LUCKY LAD to race further forward. He said he understood when LUCKY LAD began so quickly the reason for D Whyte racing outside the leader and was in no way critical. Mr Moore went on to say in future when the horse draws an outside barrier, he will consider the make-up of the field and if he feels there will be good pace in the race, his instruction will be to have the horse around midfield, however, if he believes there will be little pace, his instruction will be to have the horse ridden at the rear of the field. CORAJOSO was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of CORAJOSO did not reveal any significant findings. MY FORTUNE and LUCKY LAD were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted LUCKY LAD had sustained a laceration to its mouth. Also after the race, D'OR WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this revealed a significant amount of blood in the trachea. Before D'OR WIN can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
