Racing Incident Report

DEEP PURPLE was slow to begin. SMART CHIEF began awkwardly, then was steadied when crowded for room between TURBOJET and PERPETUAL PLEASURE. From an awkward gate, FORTUNE LIFE was obliged to race wide and without cover throughout. Near the 1600 Metres, THE PIONEER was steadied away from the heels of RESOURCEFUL PRINCE which was tight inside TURBOJET. At the 800 Metres, SMART HORSE was checked when awkwardly placed inside the heels of DEEP PURPLE. At the 600 Metres, EARL GREY was shifted to the outside of PERPETUAL PLEASURE after being disappointed for running between that horse and DEEP PURPLE. Near the 200 Metres, DEEP PURPLE was steadied when disappointed for running between RESOURCEFUL PRINCE and PERPETUAL PLEASURE which was taken in slightly by TURBOJET. No action was taken. A Marcus (SMART CHIEF) said he had ridden the horse in one of its work in the lead up to today's race and this work in his opinion was satisfactory. He said when he rode SMART CHIEF at Happy Valley on 12 March 2003, it was "sluggish" to begin, consequently got back and on that occasion he elected to improve around the field in the middle stages and the horse failed to close the race off. He said today after being inconvenienced at the break, SMART CHIEF failed to muster pace and got back further than he would have liked. He said because the horse had failed to close the race off at Happy Valley when being asked for an effort in the middle stages, he elected to remain racing in a rearward position in the hope that the horse when asked for an effort in the Straight would find the line. However, this did not happen and the horse failed to quicken when asked. He said with the benefit of hindsight this was probably mainly due to what he considered to be the slow tempo at which the race was run in the early and middle stages. The explanations submitted by A Marcus were accepted. THE PIONEER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, THE PIONEER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. Before THE PIONEER will be permitted to race again, it must pass an official veterinary examination. EARL GREY, GOOD FIT and PERPETUAL PLEASURE were sent for sampling.
