Racing Incident Report
At declaration time, C Williams was notified as the rider of both MR BEAUTIFUL and LUCKY ENCOUNTER. It was established C Williams had a firm commitment to MR BEAUTIFUL. As such, H K Yim was permitted to be substituted as the rider of LUCKY ENCOUNTER. Mr T W Leung, trainer of LUCKY ENCOUNTER, accepted responsibility for this error and was fined $2,000. MANSFIELD STAR was slow to begin. KING OF FIELD began awkwardly and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between BRILLIANT PALACE and CHARIOT OF WEI HAI which shifted out abruptly. Shortly after passing the winning post on the first occasion, DASH FOR VICTORIES became unbalanced and dipped. In the early stages, LUCKY ENCOUNTER, which was being ridden along to go forward, hung in and at the winning post on the first occasion shifted in, causing OPTIC CHIEF to become unbalanced. Slight inconvenience was caused to BLACK CARBINE which was following. At the 1300 Metres, GOLDEN SPIRIT got its head up and shifted out. This caused DASH FOR VICTORIES to be carried wider. Again approaching the 1000 Metres, GOLDEN SPIRIT got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SUPER WONGCHOY which itself was being steadied to avoid the heels of LUCKY ENCOUNTER which after crossing to the lead steadied in front. MANSFIELD STAR, which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GOLDEN SPIRIT, also got its head up and lost ground as a result. At the 200 Metres, KING OF FIELD was shifted out around LUCKY ENCOUNTER which was giving ground. Apprentice M W Leung (MANSFIELD STAR) was severely reprimanded for making a celebratory gesture just prior to the winning post. H K Yim said he had been given precise instructions to lead on the horse. He said after beginning only fairly, he rode his mount along to ensure he carried out the trainer's wishes. He said he was able to clear CHARIOT OF WEI HAI and crossed to the fence in the lead at about the 1200 Metres, he then immediately steadied LUCKY ENCOUNTER in an endeavour to steady the tempo of the race, however, in his opinion LUCKY ENCOUNTER slowed more quickly than he intended. He said when this occurred, CHARIOT OF WEI HAI then commenced to improve around his outside again and he immediately rode along hard to maintain the fence and share of the lead with that horse. H K Yim was advised his riding in the middle stages in the opinion of the Stewards lacked the judgement expected from a rider of his experience. MANSFIELD STAR and SUPER WONGCHOY were sent for sampling. GOLDEN SPIRIT was examined after the race by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had blood present at the right nostril. However, an endoscopic examination showed the horse should not be declared an official bleeder.
