Racing Incident Report
SOUNDS BETTER began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped KIMBERLEY MINES. Near the 1200 Metres, TRICCOLO, which was racing tight inside BOWIN, was steadied away from the heels of NOBLE FALCON which shifted out slightly. In the early stages, SPINNING CITY proved difficult to settle and near the 800 Metres was steadied when awkwardly placed between NOBLE MAN and UPBEAT. Approaching the 1000 Metres, BOWIN was hampered and carried wider by TRICCOLO (W C Marwing) which when being ridden along shifted to a position outside the heels of NOBLE FALCON. W C Marwing was severely reprimanded and told his riding on this occasion bordered on placing him in breach of a serious rule and in future such riding would not be condoned. Making the Home Turn, SPINNING CITY hung out badly. In the Straight, TRICCOLO was held up and unable to obtain clear running when racing behind NOBLE FALCON and tight inside NOBLE MAN. After the 300 Metres, LOYAL DEVOTION was checked when crowded for room between TRICCOLO which shifted in and KIMBERLEY MINES which shifted out. For the major part of the race, BOWIN raced wide and without cover. When questioned, A Marcus (NOBLE MAN) said he had been riding the horse in its work leading into today's race which included a barrier trial and in his opinion this work was satisfactory. He said prior to the race he spoke to Mr A T Millard, the trainer of the horse, and had discussed with him from a draw towards the outside he was concerned NOBLE MAN would not show sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside and therefore might be caught wide without cover in what he thought would be a quickly run race. He said it was decided if the horse began well he should go forward and endeavour to obtain cover where the horse was comfortable racing. He said NOBLE MAN which was leaning against the inside of its barrier was slow to begin and he then exercised his initiative, elected to steady the horse and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail hoping he would be able to improve to race somewhere about midfield, however, as he shifted towards the inside of KIMBERLEY MINES he clipped that horse's heels and blundered near the 1300 Metres. He said after this he endeavoured to improve his position, however, KIMBERLEY MINES was able to shift to the fence in front of him, NOBLE MAN then commenced to over-race, shifted out near the 1000 Metres and caused some inconvenience to SPINNING CITY. He said because of the manner in which NOBLE MAN was racing he remained one off the fence and followed TRICCOLO in the run until after the 500 Metres when he shifted to the outside of that horse to be behind BOWIN hoping that horse would carry him forward into the race. He said shortly after straightening he shifted further to the outside of BOWIN into clear running, however, NOBLE MAN did not quicken as he would have liked and near the 200 Metres was awkwardly placed inside SPINNING CITY which was hanging in and close to the heels of BOWIN which shifted out slightly. He said after being crowded at this point NOBLE MAN did not finish the race off. He said in hindsight even despite having been slow to begin, it might have been more favourable had he made use of NOBLE MAN in an endeavour to take it in a more forward position. The explanation submitted by A Marcus was recorded. BOWIN, BEARCAT and SUNBELL were sent for sampling.
