Racing Incident Report
SPRING FOUNTAIN was withdrawn on 2.3.04 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter THE ONLY ONE (F Coetzee). Before being allowed to race again, SPRING FOUNTAIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLDEN MILE was slow to begin. ARIGATO began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of WIKI WIKI. LUCKY MASTER began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. In the early stages, THE ONLY ONE hung in. Near the 1100 Metres, ARIGATO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of EASY KING. Near the 900 Metres, CAPITAL GAIN got its head on the side, shifted in and was checked away from the heels of ARIGATO which itself was being steadied away from the heels of WIKI WIKI. LUCKY MASTER, which was following CAPITAL GAIN, was hampered in consequence. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, WIKI WIKI hung out. At the 200 Metres, GOLDEN STRIDE was hampered when crowded for room between WIKI WIKI which shifted in and HONOURABLE which shifted out slightly. GOLDEN STRIDE was then ridden along to maintain its running, shifted out and bumped WIKI WIKI. In the Straight, CAPITAL GAIN hung in and EASY KING hung out. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered whether FAIRWAY FINDER had had an unfair start. Evidence was taken from M Rodd, the rider of FAIRWAY FINDER. It was established that as the gates opened, FAIRWAY FINDER put its head down, causing M Rodd to be pulled forward out of the saddle and be dislodged. The Stewards were satisfied FAIRWAY FINDER had not had an unfair start and as such deemed the horse to be a runner. Before being allowed to race again, FAIRWAY FINDER will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. G Schofield (EASY KING) said he had been instructed to lead if he was able to do so without being pressured. He said the horse had previously shown its best form over 1000 Metres and had been suspect at the distance of 1200 Metres. He said tonight EASY KING began well, he rode along for a short distance, it soon became apparent to him GOLDEN STRIDE which had drawn wider was being ridden forward to cross to the fence in the lead, he therefore at the 1100 Metres steadied his mount to avoid being caught in a speed battle in front. He said after the 1000 Metres GOLDEN STRIDE then allowed HONOURABLE to go forward of it and this resulted in him being slightly further back than he intended, however, EASY KING enjoyed a nice run throughout the race. He said despite this EASY KING again failed to close the race off over 1200 Metres tonight. The Stewards advised G Schofield that his riding in the early stages had come under notice and in similar circumstances he would be expected not to hand up favourable positions as easily as he did on this occasion. GOLDEN STRIDE and HONOURABLE were sent for sampling.
