Racing Incident Report
HIP HIP HOORAY was withdrawn on 10.4.04 on veterinary grounds (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter LASER GLORY (A Marcus). Before being allowed to race again, HIP HIP HOORAY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After being boxed, CITY GLORY became fractious, reared and dislodged O Doleuze, its rider. CITY GLORY was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, CITY GLORY will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. CITY GLORY then began awkwardly. HARRY HARRY was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of TOUCH OF CLASS. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, CAPITAL GAIN hung in and was steadied away from the hindquarters of TOUCH OF CLASS. On straightening, LUCKY CHAMPION was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CITY GLORY which was giving ground. In the Straight, CAPITAL GAIN hung in. G Mossé (HANDBAG PREMIER), 5th placegetter, was reminded of his responsibilities to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels where possible to the end of the race. When questioned, W M Lai (GLOBE RIVER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position if possible, however, he was not to make too much use of it in the early stages. He said GLOBE RIVER began well, he was aware HANDBAG PREMIER had drawn to his inside, shortly after the start he looked to see if he was clear of that runner to shift to the fence, however, at that time HANDBAG PREMIER was being hard ridden and was about one length behind him, he therefore remained racing one off the fence. He said he allowed TIRAMISU and LASER GLORY to go forward of him into the lead and after being crossed he shifted out a little to give himself comfortable racing room, this allowed HANDBAG PREMIER to improve through on his inside. W M Lai was told his riding in the early stages had come under notice and whilst in the circumstances of today's race he was not clear to shift to the fence, in the opinion of the Stewards he would have been if he had ridden more aggressively without having to make too much use of the horse in the early stages. He was further told he should ride at all times in a manner which is not open to query. GLOBE RIVER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of GLOBE RIVER after the race did not show any significant findings. HANDBAG PREMIER, TIRAMISU and TOUCH OF CLASS were sent for sampling.
