Racing Incident Report
ABLE WIN was withdrawn on 11.5.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter TANAHMERAH (R Fradd). Before being permitted to race again, ABLE WIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Shortly after the start, EXULTATION, which had drawn a wide barrier, was steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail. Near the 500 Metres, ROMANTIC SYMPHONY, which was giving ground, was checked when crowded for room inside NEVER HEADED which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in. Inconvenience was also caused to EXULTATION which was following NEVER HEADED. Shortly after this incident, EXULTATION was again steadied when disappointed for running between NEVER HEADED and SPEEDING MOLLY which improved inside the heels of CAPABEL. Over the concluding stages, TANAHMERAH hung in and after the 100 Metres shifted ground, causing ARROGANCE, which was commencing to give ground, to be crowded for room and be momentarily steadied. For the major part of the race, CAPABEL raced in a forward position but three wide without cover. P Payne (THUNDER MAN) said he had been instructed to ride the horse where it was comfortable, however, he was to ensure if possible the horse had cover. He said THUNDER MAN began fairly, it immediately became apparent to him that a number of runners which were drawn to his inside were going forward, so he elected to steady and shift back to a position behind NEVER HEADED with cover. He said when he did this, THUNDER MAN relaxed well for him, he therefore allowed the horse to continue on in this position. He said passing the 1000 Metres it became apparent to him that SPEEDING MOLLY was endeavouring to shift in behind NEVER HEADED, so he decided rather than to ride his mount along he would allow SPEEDING MOLLY to take up that position. When questioned regarding his riding of EXULTATION in the Straight, D Whyte said as usual the horse felt uncomfortable in its action. He said however tonight EXULTATION appeared to get its head up further than it usually does. He said in his opinion EXULTATION is not a horse that responds strongly to whip riding, he rode it along hands and heels in the Straight until after the 200 Metres when he hit the horse with the whip in the left hand. He said when he did this, EXULTATION shifted in, he therefore stopped riding and straightened and then resumed riding the horse out. He said in his opinion EXULTATION did not close the race off that strongly and rather other horses giving ground may have led to this impression. D Whyte was told his explanation would be recorded. F Coetzee (ZERUBBABEL), which was dropping back in distance tonight, said the intention had been to ride the horse as far forward as possible. He said ZERUBBABEL was a little slow to begin, then despite his riding was slow to muster speed, as a result raced in the kickback in the early stages and consequently was reluctant to stride out. He said in the Straight ZERUBBABEL responded only fairly, but this was to be expected as the horse was somewhat one-paced. ZERUBBABEL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of ZERUBBABEL after the race did not show any significant findings. As ZERUBBABEL was reluctant to stride out in the early stages, it will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again. SIR OCTAVIUS, TANAHMERAH and PRECIOUS SWEETIE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 13 May 2004)
ZERUBBABEL, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. ZERUBBABEL was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the right front leg. As previously advised, ZERUBBABEL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
