Racing Incident Report

EVER MORE was withdrawn on 8.6.04 on veterinary grounds (fever) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SOUTHERN LIGHT (G Schofield). Before being permitted to race again, EVER MORE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, SOUTHERN LIGHT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. ESPRIT D'OR was slow to begin. WISHMASTER and DOWN FOR THE COUNT were slow to begin and shortly afterwards were steadied when crowded for room between SALUT BEAUTE which shifted in and MAJOR BEE which shifted out. Near the 700 Metres, HELENE ELEGANCE was steadied away from the heels of GRASS HOPPER. Near the 400 Metres, WISHMASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HELENE ELEGANCE. Near the 250 Metres, SOUTHERN LIGHT was shifted to the outside of GRASS HOPPER to obtain clear running. C Williams (MANIFEST) said he had been instructed to ensure he did his utmost to lead on the horse tonight. He said as MANIFEST was racing up a class tonight, it was carrying a light weight and therefore it was considered if the horse was able to obtain the lead, it would be best suited. S Dye (DOWN FOR THE COUNT) said the intention had been to try and lead as is usual. He said however DOWN FOR THE COUNT did not begin cleanly and shortly afterwards met further inconvenience as MAJOR BEE shifted out. He said after this MAJOR BEE when just clear of him shifted back in across his running and it then became apparent to him that he would not be able to lead, he therefore allowed DOWN FOR THE COUNT to settle in midfield. He said in the middle stages DOWN FOR THE COUNT which was racing wide without cover hung in badly as it had done previously, then in the Straight when placed under pressure did not finish the race off and gave ground to finish at the rear. DOWN FOR THE COUNT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, DOWN FOR THE COUNT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings. GRASS HOPPER, MANIFEST and WISHMASTER were sent for sampling.
