Racing Incident Report
For a considerable distance after the 1000 Metres, GOOD TO GREAT proved difficult to settle, on a number of occasions got its head up and near the 800 Metres was momentarily crowded for room inside GREAT WIN. After this, GOOD TO GREAT got its head up and shifted out. SHARKI made the Home Turn awkwardly, then in the Home Straight was inclined to lay in. G Mossé (GREAT WIN) explained he had been instructed to lead on the horse. He said after being boxed GREAT WIN did not stand well and when the gates opened was a little slow to begin, then shifted out, bumped the hindquarters or SHARKI and as a result lost further ground. He said after this he elected not to ride GREAT WIN along in search for the lead as in his opinion because of the early pace of the race it would have been detrimental to the chances of the horse to have done so. He said as a result GREAT WIN raced three wide without cover because to have obtained a position with cover would have meant causing interference to runners on his inside. He said then after the 1000 Metres GREAT WIN got its head on the side, hung out, made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly and continued to hang until after straightening. He said in the Straight GREAT WIN did not respond to his riding and was most disappointing. Mr D A Hayes, trainer of GREAT WIN, confirmed the riding instructions issued to G Mossé. He said the horse was expected to win by the stable as its preparation for the race had been "perfect". He said after being slow to begin, in the circumstances he was completely satisfied with the riding of G Mossé and was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. GREAT WIN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of GREAT WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, GREAT WIN will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CLASSA FOR EVER and SHARKI were sent for sampling.
