Racing Incident Report
ENGINEERING WONDER and LUCKY TRIO was slow to begin. STRIKE TO WIN began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of MANIFEST. Before the 600 Metres, HELENE ELEGANCE was steadied when crowded for room between LUCKY TRIO which shifted out and AMO which shifted in away from the heels of ENGINEERING WONDER. In the middle stages, WISHMASTER was inclined to lay out. After the 600 Metres, AMO was steadied away from the heels of WISHMASTER. For the major part of the race, SUGAR AND SWEET raced wide and without cover. The Stewards overruled the protest/objection lodged by Mr P F Yiu, the trainer of AMO (B Prebble) which finished 2nd against ENGINEERING WONDER (D Whyte) being declared the winner for alleged interference near the 200 Metres. The Stewards considered whilst ENGINEERING WONDER shifted in near the 200 Metres when not clear of AMO, resulting in that horse being checked, they did not consider, bearing in mind the 1½ length margin between the two horses at the finish, that AMO would have finished in front of ENGINEERING WONDER had the interference which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, D Whyte pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of AMO, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case, D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Wednesday 3 November 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of this suspension is deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 27 October 2004. In addition, D Whyte was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. M Rodd (FANTASTICO) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of WISHMASTER, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be severely checked. In the circumstances of this case, M Rodd was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Wednesday 3 November 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of this suspension is deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 27 October 2004. An application made by M Rodd for this suspension to commence immediately was not acceded to. In addition, M Rodd was fined $30,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. WISHMASTER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, WISHMASTER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse had an injury to the left eye. ENGINEERING WONDER and AMO were sent for sampling. An inquiry into the reason for SOUTHERN LIGHT and SUGAR AND SWEET being checked near the 200 Metres was adjourned until prior to the first race next Wednesday 27 October 2004.
