Racing Incident Report

Mr J Moore, trainer of BEST GIFT, was fined $5,000 for failing to seek the permission of the Stewards to have the horse led by his stable staff to the Start (Stewards' Instruction 24). In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into account BEST GIFT had previously shown itself to be unruly in the parade and on the way to the barriers. BEST GIFT began awkwardly. On jumping, LANCETTIER, which was to be ridden in about midfield today, was bumped by SING FAY FAY which shifted in. Also on jumping, KINGFIELD and SUMMERLAND were crowded for room between CYPRESS HILL and WIND WINNER which shifted out. Near the 400 Metres, SUMMERLAND, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of CYPRESS HILL to go forward. After the 400 Metres, LANCETTIER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of SING FAY FAY into clear running. Near the 100 Metres, GREEN TREASURE and BEST GIFT bumped due mainly to GREEN TREASURE shifting out. Throughout the race, SPRINTER travelled three wide and without cover. B Prebble (SING FAY FAY) reported his mount hung in throughout the race and on pulling up was distressed. SING FAY FAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SING FAY FAY after the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned, Apprentice M W Leung (LUCKY HANDS) said he had been instructed to try and lead and then after obtaining this position endeavour to have the horse relaxed. He said in accordance with those instructions he rode along in the early stages, after the 1600 Metres went forward and crossed to race outside LIBERAL'S CHOICE in the lead. He said he allowed LUCKY HANDS to continue on, however, he was not able to clear LIBERAL'S CHOICE and cross to the fence and when racing outside that horse LUCKY HANDS did not relax. He said after the 1200 Metres when it became apparent to him that he would not be able to cross to the fence, he endeavoured to steady LUCKY HANDS and take a sit off LIBERAL'S CHOICE. Mr D Oughton, trainer of LUCKY HANDS, said he felt the horse had shown itself to be somewhat one-paced and he was concerned in what might be a slowly run race Apprentice Leung might have difficulty controlling it if behind runners, he therefore asked Apprentice Leung to go forward, however, he was not sure that this intention would be able to be carried out. Mr Oughton was advised in similar circumstances he should notify the Stewards of intended changes in riding instructions. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported LUCKY HANDS had bled from both nostrils and had lost its left front plate. BEST GIFT and GREEN TREASURE were sent for sampling.
