Racing Incident Report
On jumping, SUPER WONGCHOY knuckled. When the gates opened, PARADIS bounded in the air and bumped the outside gate of its stall. MAGIC TEMPLE was slow to begin. Making the first turn, FANTASTICO, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of NEW MILESTONE which shifted in when barely clear. No action was taken. After this, FANTASTICO continued to prove difficult to settle. Also making the first turn, FORTUNE BOY, which was racing wide and without cover, hung out, then after the 1000 Metres was allowed to stride forward into the lead. Near the 1200 Metres, PACIFIC VICTORY was steadied away from the heels of SUPER WONGCHOY. At the same time, MAGIC TEMPLE was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY CHAMPION. After the 1200 Metres, TANAHMERAH was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of MAGIC TEMPLE. In the middle stages, FANTASTICO hung in. At the 100 Metres, KING OF WIN was steadied and shifted to the inside of THE KING to continue going forward. F Coetzee (ZERUBBABEL) said as the horse was dropping back in distance today, the intention had been to jump it out and allow it to settle where it was comfortable. He said it was thought this would most probably be behind midfield. He said on jumping he rode ZERUBBABEL along, however, when runners crossed from the outside the horse was unable to maintain its position. He said making the first turn when racing at the rear of the field ZERUBBABEL appeared to resent the kickback it was receiving and was reluctant to stride out. He pointed out whilst ZERUBBABEL had raced successfully behind other runners on this surface previously, it was usually in a position where the kickback would not rise into the horse's face as it did today. He said entering the Back Straight he rode ZERUBBABEL along to try and have it join onto the rear of the field, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and in the Straight whilst ZERUBBABEL did make some ground, it only passed tiring runners. F Coetzee said ZERUBBABEL's work leading into today's race had in his opinion been good and a decision to drop the horse back in distance was taken due to unavailability of races over suitable distances. ZERUBBABEL was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, ZERUBBABEL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. The performance of ZERUBBABEL, which had been successful in its two most recent starts, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ZERUBBABEL will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LUCKY CHAMPION and DOUBLE HAPPINESS were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 7 February 2005)
TANAHMERAH was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D Hill yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, TANAHMERAH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
