Racing Incident Report
FIVE GRAINS was slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, BETTER BOY, which had been ridden along to go forward, was checked severely when crowded for room inside CALIFORNIASUNSHINE which at this time got its head on the side and despite the efforts of F Coetzee, its rider, shifted in away from BEING FAMOUS. Although the incident was one of significance, the Stewards did not believe it arose as a result of rider error and therefore no action was taken. In the middle stages, BETTER BOY lost ground when racing behind CALIFORNIASUNSHINE which was unable to maintain its position. Near the 700 Metres, KIDDYLAND was bumped by FIVE GRAINS which shifted out after being bumped by BETTER BOY which was endeavouring to shift towards the outside of CALIFORNIASUNSHINE. Shortly after straightening, BETTER BOY was steadied and shifted to the inside of CALIFORNIASUNSHINE into clear running. After the 200 Metres, BETTER BOY was checked when disappointed for running between KING OF WIN and RICE FIELD which at this time was giving ground. In the Straight when giving ground, CALIFORNIASUNSHINE raced ungenerously. D Whyte (FASHION JEWELLERY) was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. He said FASHION JEWELLERY had previously shown good acceleration when asked for an effort after straightening. He said tonight when he commenced to ride FASHION JEWELLERY on straightening the horse became unbalanced, changed stride and momentarily lost momentum. He said after this FASHION JEWELLERY failed to finish the race off and over about the final 100 Metres again became unbalanced. FASHION JEWELLERY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, FASHION JEWELLERY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, FASHION JEWELLERY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CALIFORNIASUNSHINE and BETTER BOY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, CALIFORNIASUNSHINE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had blood present at both nostrils, however, an endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and therefore the horse was deemed not to have bled. A veterinary inspection of BETTER BOY after the race did not show any significant findings. BEING FAMOUS and FIRST AMONG EQUALS were sent for sampling.
