Racing Incident Report

MAXIMUS began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and lost ground. LUCKY BIRD was slow to begin and then shifted across behind runners. Near the 2100 Metres, NOBLE GLORY was steadied when crowded for room between WINNING RONGRONG and LUCKY YEARS which shifted in slightly. No action was taken. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, NOBLE GLORY and SUPER CATCHER raced tight inside SPEED WINNER. Near the 600 Metres, NOBLE GLORY became unbalanced when tightened for room between WE'RE BUDDIES and LUCKY BIRD which at this time shifted to the outside of BAUHINIA. On straightening, WE'RE BUDDIES was bumped by NOBLE GLORY which endeavoured to shift to the outside of EL PRADO STAR to obtain clear running. When unable to obtain this run, NOBLE GLORY was shifted back in. At the 400 Metres, BAUHINIA was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running between NOBLE ZOOM and SPEED WINNER. After the 400 Metres, LUCKY YEARS, which was commencing to give ground, was momentarily steadied when crowded for room between MAXIMUS and BEST CHOICE, both of which shifted ground. Over the final 300 Metres, BEST CHOICE hung in. In the Straight, LUCKY BIRD hung in and near the winning post shifted ground, bumping the hindquarters of MAXIMUS. For the major part of the race, LUCKY YEARS raced wide and without cover. E Saint-Martin (WE'RE BUDDIES) explained he had been instructed from the outside barrier to ride the horse behind midfield. He said WE'RE BUDDIES began well, however, it soon became apparent to him that he would be left racing wide and without cover, therefore he allowed WE'RE BUDDIES to drift back to race near the rear. Mr Y S Tsui, trainer of WE'RE BUDDIES, said the instructions issued to E Saint-Martin tonight were the same as the horse's previous start over 1800 Metres at Happy Valley, however, on that occasion WE'RE BUDDIES raced a little keenly in the early stages and when left racing without cover passing the winning post on the first occasion was allowed to stride forward into the lead. He said on that occasion another horse maintained a position on the inside of WE'RE BUDDIES and consequently the horse would not relax and ran a quicker tempo than he wished. He said tonight with the additional distance and a wide draw he thought it would be in the best interests of the horse to be ridden behind midfield. The explanation of Mr Tsui was accepted. When questioned regarding the poor performance of NOBLE GLORY, Apprentice H W Lai said his mount travelled satisfactorily until near the 600 Metres when it received some crowding. He said after this NOBLE GLORY appeared to lose concentration and did not stride out properly for the remainder of the race. He said following the race however NOBLE GLORY did not show any signs of soreness. NOBLE GLORY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of NOBLE GLORY after the race did not show any significant findings. BEST CHOICE and BAUHINIA were sent for sampling.
